Peters takes top honors, as MC girls go to 11-0 WHS runners combine for 5 wins
Warwick’s Michael Urban set a new course record on Tuesday in the boys race.
Manheim Central’s Danae Peters took first overall by nearly a minute in the girls race.
Those individual performances were among the highlights during what turned out to be solid team performances by the Warriors and Barons cross country teams in Lititz. It was Warwick’s only home race of the season.
The Central girls improved to 11-0 overall with four more wins. In addition to defeating Conestoga Valley (17-38), ELCO (16-48) and Lancaster Mennonite (15-55), they won by the slimmest of margins over back-yard rival Warwick, 27-28.
That was the only loss on the day for a Lady Warriors’ squad which beat LMH (15-55), CV (19-41) and ELCO (18-46), pushing their record to 4-5 this season.
After Peters captured top honors in the girls race in 19:29, Warwick capitalized on its front pack to capture the next three spots behind Sam Shields (2nd, 20:16), Rachel Mueller (3rd, 20:31) and Amanda Graber (4th, 20:43).
But the Lady Barons showed some depth by claiming three of the next four spots, setting themselves up for the sweep. Jordan Mitchell took fifth in 20:47, Halle Funk was close behind in sixth (21:09), and Charis Dinger placed eighth in 21:46.
Allison Dombach rounded out MC’s top five with a 12th-place finish in 22:12.
Warwick, meanwhile, brought its fourth and fifth runners in with Abby Steinour (22:13) and Amy Wood (22:36) finishing 14th and 16th, respectively. Other finishers for the Warwick girls included Malon Bailey (17th, 22:44), Monika Roschel (19th, 22:55) and Alli Stauffer (25th, 23:21).
Turning to the boys, Central suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a close 23-32 decision to LMH, but the Barons edged Warwick (25-30), ELCO (20-39) and Conestoga Valley (21-34) to improve to 10-1.
Kyle Kegarise was the Central boys’ top finisher in fourth place in 17:29, followed close behind by Nate Lachman in seventh in 17:40.
Cole Sunderland (11th, 17:50), David Dise (13th, 17:55) and Galen Fitzkee (18th, 18:32) rounded out the Barons’ top five.
The Warwick boys (4-5 overall) earned a split, going 2-2 with wins over Conestoga Valley (23-35) and ELCO (23-38), but suffering losses to Central (25-30) and LMH (23-35).
Urban set the pace with his course-record time of 16:49, which was 28 seconds ahead of the Buckskins’ Denlinger. Will Howland added a top-10 finish for the Warriors, placing ninth overall in 17:48, and then Jordan Garner (12th, 17:53), James Latanishen (19th, 18:40) and Banner Samuelson (25th, 19:10) completed the Warriors’ top five.
