Joyce B. Brown 87, Luther Acres resident, bank supervisor
Joyce Bowman Brown, 87, of Lititz and formerly of Mount Joy, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Luther Acres.
Born Jan. 29, 1926 in East Penn Township, she was the daughter of the late Clyde A. and Irene A. Steigerwalt Bowman. Her late husband of 59 years, Bruce Brown, died in October of 2003.
Joyce is survived by two daughters: Elaine B. Ressler and husband David of Mercersburg; and Janis B. Awad and husband Raouf of Mountville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son: Jeffery B. Brown (51) in 1998; and her brother: Curtis Bowman; and her sister: Jean Bowman.
Joyce graduated from the Steven S. Palmer High School in 1943, where she was taught how to identify the silhouettes of enemy aircraft in her science class. While attending a WWII era radio operator’s school in Williamsport, she met the man who would be her husband. After her marriage, Joyce worked as a telephone operator for the former Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and later for the former Columbia Telephone Company of Elizabethtown. Joyce then spent 25 years in the banking industry, starting as a bookkeeper at the former 1st National Bank in Mount Joy and ending as a supervisor of commercial loans at the former CoreStates Bank in Lancaster.
She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Joy and served two terms on the church council. Joyce also taught Sunday School, and was active in the Lutheran Church’s women’s group. She was also a member of the Daughters of American Revolution, Lancaster Chapter, and a former member of Mount Joy Business and Professional Women. Joyce enjoyed quilting, doing crafts, painting and square dancing. She used to travel frequently with her husband and loved to make candy. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her family.
A funeral service was held at the Luther Acres Chapel of the Good Samaritan, Lititz, on March 21. Interment followed in the Mount Joy Cemetery.
