Right on target Central shooters win L-L title, place 2nd at Individuals

By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor, Staff Writer

Members of the 2012-13 Manheim Central rifle team which won the L-L League title this season with an 11-1 record included (left to right) assistant Kendra Schweitzer, Adam Stone, Elizabeth Hess, Sam Mahan, Andrew Houpt, Zach Waltz, Shelby Hontz, assistant Ryan Guffey, Melody Coyne and coach Steve Waddington.

It was a fair question for Steve Waddington to ask.

After graduating eight seniors from the previous year, Manheim Central’s rifle coach couldn’t help thinking about what laid ahead for his Barons this winter.

"It was like, ‘OK, what am I going to have?,’ and it turned out to be a really good season," Waddington said.

Indeed, it did.

With senior Mitch Saylor, junior Elizabeth Hess and senior Melody Coyne shooting the top three averages in the Lancaster-Lebanon League, Manheim Central won the regular-season championship for the second year in a row with an 11-1 record.

The Barons were hoping to make it a clean sweep at Individuals on Saturday, Feb. 9, but it was not meant to be. With Saylor, the league’s Marksman of the Year, unavailable to compete, Garden Spot edged Manheim Central by one point 986-985 for the team title.

Charles, Woolley capture first Sectional crowns Five Warriors qualify for Districts

The lyrics to Eminem’s Lose Yourself belted through Josh Charles’ earbuds last Saturday.

"The moment, you own it, you better never let it go …"

The Warwick junior, in fact, didn’t let go of the moment in the 113-pound championship match in the District Three Class AAA Section Three Wrestling Tournament at Hempfield. Charles scored a takedown with 35 seconds left in the second period and held on for a 5-4 win over Solanco’s Austin Laws, giving him his first Sectional title and a number one seed in this weekend’s District Championships.

Just three weeks earlier, those same two grapplers squared off for the L-L League crown in a match that Charles won 6-4 in OT.

"This and Leagues were my two favorite things this year," said Charles, who improved his record to 35-5. "Winning Leagues was nice, but I think (winning Sectionals) feels a little bit better going into Districts."

Indians oust the Barons District Boys Basketball

There’s an old saying in sports that you can’t teach speed.

On Tuesday night, in a District Three Triple-A first-round boys basketball playoff game, top-seeded Susquehanna Township had more than enough to go around when they hosted 16th-seeded Manheim Central.

For the Barons, who were untested by that kind of weaponry this season, there was little margin for error, and they suffered a season-ending 74-36 loss in Harrisburg.

"Obviously we weren’t used to the speed of that game," Barons’ coach Chris Sherwood remarked. "But I think that was the only issue. Even the size factor, to me, was less of an issue than the speed was. You can’t mimic that speed in practice and if you haven’t seen that speed all year, which we haven’t, that’s tough to overcome."

Evan Stauffer, one of six seniors on Manheim Central’s squad this year, led the Barons with 12 points in the losing cause. The loss dropped the Central boys’ final record to 15-9, but Sherwood couldn’t say enough about how pleased he was with his players.

Rams prevail over Warwick in District play-in, 51-38

It could be argued that the Warwick boys basketball team began the playoffs long before its District Three Triple-A play-in game last Friday night against Central Dauphin.

Having started the season 3-7 for the second time in three years, the Warriors battled back into contention with eight wins in their final 12 games. Although they fell short of the playoffs in 2010-11 following a surge in the second half of the season, they managed to get there this time, with a 37-25 win over Penn Manor on Feb. 1 proving to seal the deal.

Unfortunately for Warwick, however, it was a short-lived stay.

Zayd Issah, a Penn State University football recruit, scored a game-high 15 points to lead three Central Dauphin players in double figures, as the 18th-seeded Rams ended the 15th-seeded Warriors’ season with a 51-38 victory. Ryan Beaver and Brian Laird chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively, and CD outscored Warwick 14-3 in the second quarter to grab a lead they never relinquished.

Fabulous four MC athletes sign offers

Given the choice, Manheim Central soccer player Kristin Robeson would play in midfield.

“I like the aspect of offense and defense at the same time,” she said.

Nate Henry, an All-Star for the Barons’ football team, leans toward defense.

“I played offensive tackle this past year,” he said, “but defense is definitely my preference.”

Henry will get his wish in college, as he will play defensive end at Bloomsburg University. Robeson could also get her first choice as she heads to Hofstra University (N.Y.) this fall to continue her athletic career.

Manheim Central’s Aerika High and Cole Proffitt are also fulfilling their goals with playing at the next level. High will take her softball talents to Wagner College (N.Y.), while Proffitt is headed to Penn State University to throw the javelin for the Nittany Lions’ track and field team.

All four signed on the dotted line during National Signing Day festivities in the Manheim Central High School Media Center on Wednesday, Feb. 6.
