Hostetter earns brief promotion to the Phantoms

Then when Andreas Lilja cleared waivers and joined the Phantoms, Hostetter returned to the Titans in the East Coast Hockey League.

The fate of Philadelphia Flyers’ prospect Tyler Hostetter was tied to that of veteran National Hockey League defenseman Andreas Lilja.

So when the 37-year-old Swedish born Lilja cleared waivers last Thursday, one day after being waived by the Flyers, that meant he was joining the American Hockey League’s Adirondack Phantoms.

The domino effect was that 5-foot-11, 182-pound defenseman Hostetter left the Phantoms, one step below the NHL, and went back to the Trenton Titans of the East Coast Hockey League.

The Lititz native took the move in stride.

"I’ve just got to keep working hard and hopefully everything falls into place," said Hostetter, who will celebrate his 22nd birthday next Wednesday, Jan. 30.

Getting their swagger back

Talking Sports By

Bruce Morgan At the beginning of this month, the questions were inevitable. Even before the new year, a few people started asking me, ‘What is wrong with the Warwick boys basketball team?’

You knew the comparisons were going to start with this year’s team and the 2010-11 squad when they had several key players returning from the group that went to the State playoffs one year earlier, but struggled in the early going with a 3-7 record.

Actually, the similarities are pretty remarkable. Like the Warwick boys team from two winters ago, this year’s Warriors have a veteran senior class. They entered the season with high expectations. And they, too, had a 3-7 record after 10 games.

I’ve got to admit that I thought they were in deep trouble after losing 44-27 to Wilson in the consolation game of their Holiday Tournament. Although they were trailing by just five late in the third quarter, to me, they didn’t seem to have a lot of life in that game.

Stief’s layup wins thriller for Warwick Warriors grab sole possession of second place

By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor, Staff Writer

Photo by Preston WhitcraftWarwick senior guard K'shawn Mickens, shown here driving past Ephrata's Brady Sipe last Friday, came up with a key late-game steal in the Warriors' win over Hempfield on Tuesday night.

Tyler Stief got an inbounds pass from teammate Tyler Morris with four seconds left and knew that he had a lane to the basket.

At that point, the Warwick senior guard had two options.

Take the ball to the basket himself, knowing that Hempfield had six team fouls, or dish it off to an open Colby Weit on the post.

Stief decided to keep it and he made no mistake, scoring on a buzzer-beating layup to snap a 39-39 tie and boost the Warriors to a thrilling 41-39 victory over Hempfield in front of a Blue Ridge Cable-11 viewing audience in a Section One barn-burner in Lititz.

"I felt like I could get to the hole the whole game," Stief said, "so I told Coach (Jeff Landis) with a minute left that I wanted the ball and he gave me a chance at the end and I just got lucky enough to get it. Matt Engle set a good screen and got me open."

Warwick, MC matmen prepare for L-L Tourney Warwick Manheim Central

Record Express file photoWarwick's Josh Charles, shown here battling for position against an opponent, will take a 16-4 record into the L-L League Tournament.

First things are first for the Warwick wrestlers.

Early this week, their thoughts weren’t going any further than their Section One showdown with unbeaten Solanco on Wednesday night.

Once they stepped off the mat with the Mules, however, their attention was going to turn pretty quickly to the L-L League Tournament, slated for this Friday and Saturday at Conestoga Valley High School.

"There won’t be (a problem gearing up for Leagues)," Warwick coach Ned Bushong said.

Manheim Central skipper Troy Sunderland doesn’t expect motivation to be a problem for his wrestlers either with L-L League bragging rights on the line in Witmer.

"I think the attitude’s been good and I think we’re right on track for where we want to be as far as progressing and developing," he said.

Both the Warriors and Barons have goals to grab multiple individual medals, along with placing among the top teams. In 2012, Warwick took 13th in the team standings with four place-finishers, while Central ended up fourth with eight medalists.

Warriors ousted from playoff contention Ice Hockey

By: JOHN CRAWFORD Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer

Playing two games in three days, the Warwick ice hockey team came away with a split, winning 10-0 over West York last Friday and losing to Cedar Crest 6-2 on Monday.

That gave the Warriors a record of 2-13, which eliminated them from Central Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (CPIHL) playoff contention.

The Warriors opened the weekend quickly against the undermanned Bulldogs when Steven Crawford skated in from the blue line to the slot, took a shot and put the rebound in the net 1:59 into the game. He followed that effort with two quick goals to complete an early hat trick. The second goal came at 5:10 on a shot from the faceoff circle. Drew White picked up the assist. Thirteen seconds later, Crawford added another goal unassisted from the slot for the pure hat trick and a 3-0 Warrior lead.

Asked he ever picked up a quicker hat trick, Crawford said "No. Two goals, but never three goals that fast."

The Warriors continued to apply pressure, but did not score again until Crawford came down center ice and shifted over to the left wing. From there, he passed to Nathan Weaver in the slot and Weaver buried the puck behind Bulldog goalie Jared Gemmil for the 4-0 lead.

Manheim Central outduels the Vikings in overtime

Manheim Central senior guard Evan Stauffer led all scorers with 22 points and the Barons outlasted Northern Lebanon 55-54 in overtime in a Section Three boys basketball game in Manheim on Tuesday night.

Senior Jacoby Brumbach also reached double figures with 11 points, as the Central boys avenged a 65-45 loss to the Vikings on Dec. 21 in Fredericksburg. With its third straight win, the Barons improved to 7-5 in Section Three (11-5 overall). It also marked Central’s fifth win in their last six games, enabling them to pull within one game of both Norlebco (8-4 league) and Lampeter-Strasburg (8-4 league), which lost 49-42 to Donegal.

In a hard-fought battle from the start, the Barons led by six at the end of the first quarter and then carried a 28-25 lead into the half.

But Norlebco, which entered the game in a second-place tie with Lampeter-Strasburg, got a team-high 17 points from Pat Stevens and outscored Central 14-9 in the third to grab a two-point advantage going to the final stanza. There, the Central boys were able to pull even at the end of regulation, 48-48. Then, despite finishing the game shooting just 5-of-15 from the foul line, the Barons outscored Norlebco 7-6 in the OT period to escape with the win.

A junior’s look at local government

Photo by Preston WhitcraftLititz Mayor Ron Oettel welcomes new junior council member Megan Rothermel to borough chambers.

"I feel that all of our Junior Councilmen have served admirably. After serving their five month term, they have a better understanding of what defines our community and the importance of community service. This experience is meant to encourage them to seek future public service and to lead their peers by example."

- Douglas Bomberger, Lititz Borough Council

"The JCP program enables Council to hear directly from students on issues that are in the ‘now’. It allows the students to explore the breadth of volunteer service opportunities within local government, and they take that information back to their peers. The students come from differing backgrounds, different schools and have varying aspirations, mirroring the residents of our community. It’s also a way for Council to highlight the leaders of tomorrow."

- Karen Weibel, Borough Council President

Lititz’s newest junior council member is Megan Rothermel, a senior at Warwick High School. She is also co-president of PALS (Peer Assisted Learning Support), serves on Student Council, is a member of Future Business Leaders of America, National Business Honors Society and Debate Club.
