Modesty amid the fury of wrestling

Talking Sports By

Bruce Morgan As I stood talking to Mike Clair and Dale Dietrich outside of the Conestoga Valley gym last Saturday afternoon, one of the biggest things that struck me was the contrast.

First of all, wrestling is supposed to be — and in fact is — a tough sport. It’s a battle of wills between two opponents in the center of the mat with no place to hide. Bloody noses are a regular occurrence, the result of cross-face maneuvers and getting faces slammed into the mat.

With the intensity increasing at the District and PIAA state tournaments and the stakes becoming much more serious, I marvel walking through the tunnels at the amount of bloody lips, black eyes and bruises faces as I pass wrestlers in the tunnels at the Hersheypark Arena and Giant Center. If you don’t realize how physical the sport is before then, that brings it home loud and clear.

Anyway, getting back to the contrast … here are Mike and Dale, two grizzled veterans of a tough, punishing sport, and they were a couple of teddy bears as I talked to them about their induction into the Lancaster-Lebanon League Coaches Hall of Fame last Saturday. And I say that with all due respect about both of them because they are immensely deserving of the recognition they received prior to the championship matches.

Dietrich inducted into L-L Hall

By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor, Staff Writer

Photo by Preston WhitcraftDale Dietrich was honored last Saturday for a 35-year junior high coaching career at Warwick and Manheim Township in which he produced 79 E-town Optimist individual champions.

It was perhaps fitting that Manheim Township won the Lancaster-Lebanon League Tournament’s team crown last weekend.

The wrestlers who made it happen came up through the junior high ranks with Dale Dietrich as their head coach.

Prior to the finals on Saturday at Conestoga Valley High School, Dietrich was one of five who were inducted into the L-L League Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame for his long career as a junior high coach, both at Warwick and Manheim Township. Joining him in the 2012 Class included contributors Mike Clair and Dave Byrne, coach John Felix and wrestler/coach Arlen Mummau.

For Dietrich, it was an honor that truly touched him.

"I guess next to my kids getting married and the birth of my grandkids … being named to this is really a great honor for me especially since I was just a junior high coach my whole career," he said. "It’s totally unexpected. Most of the people that get honored in this are high school coaches or high school wrestlers that went to States or something like that. So to be included in this group is just an incredible honor."

Charles, Devenney win their first L-L gold medals Warriors place fourth with nine place-finishers

Senior heavyweight Tom Devenney had a chip on his shoulder after missing out on last year’s Lancaster-Lebanon League Tourney.

Junior 113-pounder Josh Charles had a little more gas left in the tank following a semi-final loss at the League Championships in 2012.

In the end, both Devenney and Charles brought home gold medals at the L-L League Wrestling Championships last Saturday night, leading a 2-for-3 performance for Warwick in the finals and helping to seal a fourth-place finish in the team standings with 155 points.

Devenney (19-1), who was forced out of last year’s L-L Tournament due to a medical condition, won his first League championship with a 2-1 overtime win over Solanco’s Bo Spiller (24-4), capitalizing on a penalty point when the Mules’ sophomore committed his third false start.
