Grant powers Indians past MC in District quarters
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor, Staff Writer

Photo by Preston WhitcraftManheim Central running back Marc Royer follows a block from lineman Nate Brandt while running for a first down last Friday.
In the three-plus decades that Mike Williams has been head coach of the Manheim Central football team, the Barons have certainly had a slew of excellent athletes.
The one thing that they probably haven’t had in those 32 years is the speed that they saw from Susquehanna Township running back Colby Grant last Friday night.
"(Grant) is quite a player," Williams remarked. "He’s got so much speed."
The Indians’ 5-foot-9 jitterbug took advantage of that speed to account for 276 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns while leading 3rd-seeded Susquehanna Township to a 27-17 victory over 11th-ranked Manheim Central in a District Three Triple-A quarterfinal-round playoff game at Roscoe Warner Field in Harrisburg.
Both squads entered the game riding a win streak, but while the Indians (10-2) punched their ticket to this Friday’s semi-final round against 2nd-seeded West York (a 42-17 winner over Spring Grove) with their seventh straight victory, the Barons saw their five-game streak come to a halt. Central (9-3) was also trying to reach double-digit victories for the first time since advancing to the PIAA State Triple-A championship game in 2009, but Williams said they just lost to a better team.

Blue Streaks stop the Warriors to win Red Rose C championship
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor, Staff Writer

Photo by Preston WhitcraftWith their backs to the end zone, Warwick's defensive players look to make a goal line stand against Manheim Township's offense in the Red Rose League C championship game at Manheim Central last Saturday.
The goal of the Warwick Midget C Red football team was two-fold on Saturday.
Spoil Manheim Township White’s unbeaten season.
And of course, win their championship game.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, it wasn’t meant to be.
Blue Streaks’ running back Brett Benjamin ran for a game-high 195 yards and four TD’s on 27 carries, as Township capped a perfect 12-0 season with a 30-0 win in the Red Rose League’s C championship game at Manheim Central’s Elden Rettew Field.
"It’s just a formidable little force," Warwick coach Tom Rice said of Township’s team. "Very-well coached, very organized. They always come hard."
Warwick proved to be a formidable little force in its own right this fall, and although their final game didn’t end as they had hoped, the Warriors still finished with a solid 9-3 record while reaching the first-ever championship game in Warwick program history.

Sounds like a great idea Musicians give hunger top billing
By: MELISSA HUNNEFIELD Record Express Staff, Staff Writer
Many know Todd Fulginiti as a Lititz Borough Council member, or as a music teacher and choral director at Kissel Hill Elementary School.
What many may not know about the unassuming musician and composer is that he also volunteers with an organization geared towards feeding the county’s needy.
A chance encounter with a homeless, begging woman on a wintry New York City street made a huge impact on Fulginiti’s life. Passers-by completely ignored the woman, and Fulginiti was deeply affected by this.
"The things that impressed me were how cold it was that day and how frail the woman was. She definitely looked like she needed to be in a hospital," Fulginiti remarked. "At the time, my wife was helping at a local food bank, and I realized that simple, local actions on my part could help to prevent others from falling into the situation of the lady I saw on the street."
Not long after, Fulginiti was speaking with a musician friend, Tom Hayden — a mail carrier from Brownstown — who was considering starting up a local non-profit to help deal with the problem of hunger in Lancaster County.

Brubaker hosts foreign dignitaries Senator plans to visit former Soviet states next year
By: RICHARD REITZ Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer
As chairman of the Pennsylvania Senate Finance Committee, it’s not uncommon for Sen. Mike Brubaker (R-36th) to meet with experts on taxation and economic issues.
But hosting experts from the former Soviet nations of Moldova and Armenia? Well, that is a bit unusual. And as it turns out, rather enlightening.
For more than three weeks, Arsen Nikoghosyan of Yerevan, Armenia, and Veronica Vragaleva of Chisinau, Moldova, were special guests of Brubaker’s as part of the Legislative Fellows Program (LFP), a program sponsored by the U.S. State Department, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
The program immersed Arsen and Veronica in state government, as they were able to observe Senate sessions in Harrisburg, watch the legislative process in action, meet with various legislative and finance leaders, and exchange ideas and insights with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
Arsen and Veronica were in Lititz Nov. 2 to tour the town and meet with some local constituents who asked a number of questions that ranged from curiosity about their home countries, to their thoughts on how government taxation and regulation protects — or inhibits — the interests of small business.

Paying tribute

Photo by Stan HallThe service of local veterans did not go unnoticed in Lititz, as schools, churches and retirement communities held Veterans Day programs throughout the community. Bonfield Elementary School held its annual program last Friday, which included a Wall of Heroes (above). More photos from this and other local veterans events are on page A16.

Privy preservation Portions of Moravian outhouse may date back to 1759
By: CORY VAN BROOKHOVEN Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer

Photo by Preston WhitcraftHistorical-minded volunteers Bill Oehme and Tom Wentzel carefully dismantle the old Moravian privy next to the Moravian archives building.
My historical story for this month takes us to Moravian Square on Main Street in downtown Lititz. Located on the side yard of the Grosh house (which is also owned by the Moravian Church) stands an old outhouse, or "privy."
More than likely, it was built in the early 1800s when the Grosh house was built. It has been modified over the years, with the latest change turning it into a three-door facility, complete with an extra room which has been determined to be a waiting room.
Due to the age of the structure, the pits were filled many years ago, and the floors and some of the support beams are rotted. In addition, the stone and brick walls are starting to crumble and lean. If this building was to be saved, something had to be done, and done soon.

Help stock the shelves Scouts collecting for local food bank
This past Saturday Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts in the Lititz area delivered "Scouting for Food" bags to as many homes as possible. They will collect the bags, filled with donations, this Saturday to help replenish the pantry at the Lititz/Warwick Community Chest, the organization that supplies food to local families in need.
If you did not get a bag this past Saturday but want to contribute during this Thanksgiving season, bring your non-perishable food items to the Lititz Church of the Brethren pavilion this Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9 to 11 a.m.
Scouts like Andrew Blankenmyer from Troop 154 (above) will package the items and see that they get to the donation center.

Warwick’s semi-final win is a D-light TD’s by Glass, Minnich support C Red team’s playoff shutout
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor, Staff Writer

Photo by Preston WhitcraftWillow Street quarterback Sean McTaggart and his teammates found very little running room against Warwick's defense last Saturday. Shown here, McTaggart is swarmed by several Warriors' tacklers, including (left to right) Hunter Brown (24), Cayden Rihn, William Gonzalez, David Hnasko and Ethan Minnich (40).
If there was a game that the Warwick Midget C Red football team would like to have back this season, it was an opening-week 20-6 loss to Manheim Township in September.
They will have a chance to get some revenge this Saturday.
With a lot more at stake.
Behind a 12-0 shutout of Willow Street last Saturday at Grosh Field in Lititz in the playoff semi-finals, the Warriors advanced to the championship game against the Blue Streaks (a 27-0 winner over Elizabethtown), which will be played at Manheim Central at 4 p.m.
