Rotary raises $70,000 Craft show means big bucks for Lititz

Photo by Stephen SeeberWhile attendance at the Lititz Rotary Craft Show is tough to determine, it has been estimated at 40,000 in the past. According to organizers, last Saturday's event was another great turnout, netting about $70,000 for the civic organization. This is the morning scene on craft day, looking north on Broad Street at the Square.
The crowd was strong on Saturday, and as the crowd goes so does the success of the Lititz Rotary Club’s biggest fundraiser — The Craft Show.
"The club was very happy with the show this year," said Tom Oehme, event chairman for the Rotarians. "It all worked out very well and the vendors all seemed to have had a great day."
In all, 750 spaces along Broad and Main streets, and in Lititz Springs Park, were rented by 480 crafters.
While attendance numbers have been estimated as high as 40,000 in past years, Oehme said exact numbers are difficult to determine.
"As for the crowd, this is always hard to estimate, and this year would be a very hard one, as the crowd was strong all day long," Oehme explained. "On hot humid days, the crowd will be reasonably strong early on, but once noon hits, it fades fast. This year, thanks to the man upstairs, the weather was outstanding and the crowds stayed strong until around 3:30."

In the early hours of Saturday morning, the gray sky overhung with clouds, craft-seekers began moving purposefully toward the center of town. Stepping out from homes, parked cars and even school bus shuttles from far-flung parking lots, thousands of shoppers arrived with a love of crafts and money to spend.
Throughout the downtown area, the 450 artisans of the Lititz Rotary Craft Show carefully arranged their wares in anticipation of the crowds, but they weren’t the only ones getting ready. The enterprising children of Lititz also prepared, setting up lemonade stands, filling wagons with ice-cold water bottles and laying out sweet treats for hungry and thirsty shoppers.
In addition to the front-porch drink stands of young entrepreneurs, numerous local children’s organizations also sought to benefit from the expected 40,000 shoppers. Leaders of Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, soccer teams, marching bands and school groups set aside this day as a golden opportunity to raise money for the causes they serve.

Five Warwick players lead Stars to Eastern National crown
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
Memorial Day Madness started what turned out to be one mad ride for the 16U PA Shooting Stars girls fast-pitch Junior Olympic softball team this summer.
Nearly three months later, that road led them to the Pony Eastern National Championship on Aug. 1 in Cary, N.C., capped by a 6-2 victory over the Richmond Storm in the finals which improved their record to 42-9-2.
"We thought we had a chance and that was certainly one of our goals at the beginning of the year," Shooting Stars coach Jon Byler said.
The squad consisted of five Warwick players — juniors-to-be Victoria Byler, Nikole Rottkamp and Jenny George and soon-to-be sophomores August Mason and Vanessa Strohm. But they got key performances from all 11 girls on the roster — the majority of those from the Lancaster-Lebanon League — while assembling a well-rounded attack.
"We’re exceptional defensively — I think that was our key," Byler said, "and our pitching was exceptional all weekend long. We have 11 kids that can really play. Everybody contributed, which was great."

Barons upbeat at L-L Media Day
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
The 2011 season was supposed to be a rebuilding time for the Manheim Central football team.
Yet the Barons still finished 8-3 and qualified for the District Three Triple-A playoffs.
Unfortunately, things ended on a disappointing note with a 34-31 triple OT loss to Palmyra in the opening round of Districts.
But the good news for Manheim Central is that it has 14 total returning letter-winners on the roster for the 2012 season.
"I think we have the potential to (make a deeper run)," senior tight end/defensive lineman Nate Henry said at L-L League Media Day last Friday. "We have to get together and really work hard and I think we can get a little further than last year. We definitely have the potential, though."
"A lot of our players from last year are back, so we have the experience factor," junior running back/linebacker Ian Hanselman said. "I just think that this year with the players we have and the experience, I think we’ll be able to go a lot further."
