School district shifts teachers, replaces others WHS welcomes new assistant principal

By: MICHAEL C. UPTON Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer

Personnel moves occupied most of the board of directors agenda Tuesday, as the Warwick School District administration made significant moves to restructure elementary schools and officially hire dozens of employees before the 2012-13 school year opens.

Most of the hiring moves were made to replace exiting teachers, especially in the elementary sector.

"We had seven resignations or retirements (last year)," said Superintendent Dr. April Hershey after the meeting. "We just had to move people around."

During the normally passive "transfers and change of status" portion of the agenda, the board approved 17 moves on the elementary level. Second grade Lititz Elementary teacher Jill Sturgis will move to the third grade at John R. Bonfield. Diana Delmotte will stay at Bonfield, but move from second to first grade. These two join other full- and part-time teachers shifting responsibilities. The board also needed to move to fill 12 resignations under non-instructional personnel, including food and nutrition services assistants, learning support assistants and athletic coaches.

Local actress Allison Fund resigned as fall assistant drama director at the high school.

The board elected 18 people to non-instructional positions, the most significant being Thomas Gallagher as programmer for the district.

Rock Lititz plan moves forward

By: GARY P. KLINGER Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer

The long-term expansion plan that will further entrench the rock n’ roll industry in the Lititz area has gotten the municipal support needed to prepare for construction.

An Aug. 15 hearing was held by the Warwick Township supervisors on changing the zoning classification of an 95.5 acre tract located on south side of West Newport Road (36 W. Newport Road) from its present classification of Agricultural to Campus Industrial, and to modify under certain circumstances and conditions for maximum permitted height for construction.

This was all in relation to a 25-year expansion plan for local businesses Clair Global, Tait Towers and Atomic Design as they anticipate the building of their Rock Lititz campus. This would be a state-of-the-art facility for the creation of complete sets used for international music and entertainment tours designed by Atomic, built by Tait and sound engineered by Clair.

The plan will also bring new jobs to the area while boosting the local economy, from retail to lodging and beyond.

Work on this project is expected to begin next year and will take place over a period of many years.

Antique show tries new date, adds entertainment

By: MELISSA HUNNEFIELD Record Express Staff, Staff Writer

The Moonlighters will perform in the Oehme Gazebo this Saturday.

It’s a year of firsts for the Lititz Springs Park Antique Show. It’s the first year that Dale Dietrich has served as chair of the event. Additionally, it’s the first year in the show’s 46-year history that it won’t be held the Saturday before Labor Day.

The show will be held in Lititz Springs Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 25. The rain date will be Sept. 1

"The antique show committee felt it necessary to make some changes to the show because the show has been decreasing steadily in terms of dealer participation," explained Dietrich. "We asked some of the dealers why the downturn and one of the responses was that it was the same weekend as some other shows."

Millie Eby, who has been organizing the event for 23 years, expects 40-50 vendors on the day of the event. She’ll accept new exhibitors up until the show begins. The committee is going out of their way this year to woo new vendors and charm loyal returnees.

Summer things never change Chicken-corn soup and other traditions in the Penryn Picnic Grove

By: JANET SCOUTEN Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer

Photos by Stan HallThe Penryn Picnic Grove was a festive setting for last weekend's Sunday school picnic, a community event that has been going on for well over a century.

In the countryside between Lititz and the neighboring community of Penryn, the end of summer is making itself known. Corn stalks are taller than a full-grown man, tobacco leaves are drying in the barns and the fertile land of Lancaster County is ripe with the bounty of the season.

The past 100 years have brought changes large and small to this area, but one thing has remained constant — last Saturday’s annual St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church picnic in the grove off Penryn Road.

For generations, this church picnic, open to the community at-large, has been a sweet farewell to summer days. As seasons and years have passed, the little children who once ran around underfoot are now the elders of the group, sharing their wisdom and memories with new generations.

At least five generations of one family in particular, the Galebachs, have attended St. Paul. With the branches of this family tree woven throughout the church, Galebachs young and old serve alongside other members at the picnic in a variety of functions.

Manley named to National U19 team

Alyssa Manley, a 2012 Warwick graduate, was named to the 2012-13 U.S. U19 Junior National squad. In July, Alyssa was invited to compete for a spot on the team at USA Field Hockey’s Junior National Camp. This was a four-day camp held at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst campus.

At the conclusion of Junior National Camp, 25 athletes were named to the U19 squad. Manley, along with the other members of the squad, will report to a training camp in January, 2013 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. Following the training camp, USA Field Hockey will announce a travel squad that will tour internationally in the spring of 2013.

Manley is currently attending Syracuse University and is a member of the field hockey team. She was previously a member of the U-17 U.S. Junior National Team that toured Holland in April 2011.

Three-set wins lift Warwick over Manheim Central, 4-3

Behind Paige Myer and April Aument, the Warwick girls tennis team went 2-0 in three-set singles matches against Manheim Central on Monday.

That turned out to be the difference for the Lady Warriors in a 4-3 non-league victory over their back-yard rivals in both teams’ non-league opener in Manheim.

With victories by Myer and Aument, the Warwick girls earned a split in singles play, and they took two of three doubles matches to pull out the win.

Grace Kensinger got things started for the Lady Barons by defeating Amber Weaver 6-1, 6-1 in the number one match.

But then Warwick answered with back-to-back victories at two and three. Myer dropped the first game by a 6-2 score against MC’s Sophie Iosue, but she pulled even with a 6-4 decision and eventually won the third by a 10-5 decision to clinch the win at number two. The third singles match followed a similar pattern, with MC’s Kelli Barber taking the early lead on a 6-2 game-one victory. But Aument answered back, taking game two 6-2 and putting it away with a 10-5 conquest in the third game.

Warriors tied for second place after two matches

Photo by Preston WhitcraftWarwick senior Drew Baker chips the ball onto the green on his way to shooting a 4-over 76 at Crossgates last Thursday.

Warwick had two golfers break 80 in its season opener last Thursday, Aug. 13 at Crossgates Golf Club, helping the Warriors card a final overall score of 337 which was good for second place out of seven teams.

"We have some guys that can shoot well and they did," Warwick coach Rob Fisher said. "It was way better than we were expecting, so it was definitely a pleasant surprise."

Senior Drew Baker and sophomore Walt Pelensky led the way for the Warrior linksmen with a 4-over 76 and 7-over 79, respectively.

"Drew played well, but didn’t score well. He missed a couple of short putts and he probably should have been around 73," Fisher said. "Walt, I think, was pretty happy with his round. I’m sure he had some shots he’d like back, but I’m pleased. For the first match, it’s pretty good."

Andrew Davies (89) and Ian Hart (93) rounded out the Warriors’ top four, as they placed two strokes ahead of Hempfield (339) while finishing the day with a 5-1 record.
