Water plan lacks public awareness Without more education, ‘people will see this as a major intrusion,’ says council president
By: GARY P. KLINGER Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer
Lititz Borough Council members were briefed Tuesday night on a new water resources program that may not be well-received by residents who are unaware of the proposal.
Mary Gattis-Schell of the Lancaster County Planning Commission led the discussion. The program, called Blueprints, can be found in its entirety on the planning commission’s website. In essence, this is an integrated water resource plan for the county that will impact storm water run-off, aspects of planning in regard to water, and take an overall systems approach to making sure the county has a reliable supply of clean water.
Borough council members Scott Hain and council president Karen Weibel were involved in the development of the plan. However, that does not mean that they, or their colleagues on council, have completely bought into the plan. That is because, once enacted, the new measures could come at a considerable cost which Lititz and 59 other municipalities might struggle to fund. In addition, Weibel expressed concern that the public has not been properly educated on the proposed changes and related requirements.

Lititz time warp George Bew spotted at antique show
By: CORY VAN BROOKHOVEN Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer

Photo by Stephen SeeberThe Lititz Springs Park antique show was the centerpiece of a lovely Saturday in the borough, which included a performance by the Moonlighters in the Oehme Gazebo.
When I was asked to cover this year’s Lititz Springs Park Antique Show, I jumped at the chance. As many of you know, I love writing and learning about Lititz and Warwick Township history. I also collect local antiques, and look forward to this show every year. It’s certainly one of my favorites by far, and the fact that I can enjoy it while being in the gorgeous Lititz Springs Park only adds to the fun.
Getting up extra early, I had coffee in hand, and made my way to the park. By 7 a.m., most of the dealers were set up and ready to go. Knowing that the Moonlighters would be playing live later that morning in the Oehme gazebo was a sure way for me to stick around even longer.

Despite their youth, Warwick hopes to rise above expectations

Photo by Preston WhitcraftSeniors on the Warwick field hockey team this year are (left to right) Ericka Griffith, Kiersten Cepeda and Autumn Hess.
The last time Warwick’s field hockey team played a game that counted, they were playing for the PIAA State Triple-A championship. Unfortunately, their 2-1 OT loss to Hempfield last November may go down as their most agonizing defeat in program history, having dominated the stats against the Black Knights only to fall short.
When the Lady Warriors began pre-season workouts on Aug. 13 for the 2012 season, their team looked a lot different than the one that left the Zephyr Sports Complex at Whitehall High School in Allentown last fall. Nine seniors graduated from that squad, including Alexa Charles, Emily Harting, Alyssa Manley, and Emma Rissinger, who all received All-Lancaster-Lebanon League and All-Region honors. Manley then took home First-Team All-American recognition, while Charles and Harting were named Second-Team. Others who moved on included Bethany Han, Kayla Laughman, Marissa Lutz, Jenica Miller and Jen Stipe.
This year, Warwick’s only returning starters are senior Kiersten Cepeda and junior Liz Wenger, who both played at forward at 2011 and are moving to the midfield this fall. Those two will help lead a young Lady Warrior squad into a 2012 season in which they are hoping to rise above the expert’s low expectations for them.

Warriors take third place at Four Seasons Barons go 3-3 at Tanglewood Golf
Warwick sophomore Walt Pelensky fired a season-best round of 76 and the Warrior golfers placed third out of seven teams at Four Seasons last Wednesday, Aug. 22 with a score of 333 in Section One action.
Overall, the Warriors finished the day with a 4-2 record, improving their overall mark on the season to 13-5. They placed 18 strokes behind second-place Hempfield, which had a round of 315. Manheim Township, led by Andy Butler’s match-best 68, remained unbeaten with a 287.
Warwick senior Drew Baker, averaging a team-best 77.1 through three matches, stayed consistent by firing a 78. He was followed by Andrew Davies, who shot 88, and Ian Hart, who finished with a score of 91.
The Warriors held off fourth-place Penn Manor (337) by four strokes and Ephrata (338) was right on their heels, followed closely by Conestoga Valley (340) and Cedar Crest (352). Warwick returned to the links yesterday (Wednesday) for a Section One match at Fairview Golf Course.
Elsewhere, Manheim Central competed in Section Two action last Thursday, Aug. 23 at Tanglewood Golf Course in Quarryville, placing fourth with 335 in a tightly-contested match. Only 10 strokes separated the top four teams, with host Solanco (325) capturing top honors, followed by Garden Spot (331), Cocalico (332) and the Barons. Sheehan led the winners with a 74, while Garden Spot’s Aaron Fricke scored a match-best 68.

Senior-laden Lady Barons hope to contend in Section 2
A year ago, the Manheim Central field hockey team got a taste of the PIAA State Double-A playoffs after placing sixth in the District Three Tournament.
Although they lost some key players from that squad which finished 13-11 overall, the Lady Barons would like nothing more than to get back to that point.
To help them toward that end, the Central girls have yet another new coach — Warwick High School and recent Temple University grad Becca Keener, who is the Lady Barons’ fifth different skipper since the end of the 2004 season. In her first year with the squad, Keener has inherited a squad with 10 seniors, and she has been very pleased with the leadership of those players.
Lititz Record sports editor Bruce Morgan recently spoke with Keener to get her thoughts about the team and the upcoming season. The following is a transcript of their conversation.
Bruce Morgan: It looks like you have a lot of seniors on the team. How much of a positive impact is that having on your team?
