Paul E. Zug87, WWII Navy veteran, Warwick High School custodian

Paul E. Zug, 87, formerly of Lititz, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2012 at United Zion Retirement Community in Lititz.

Born in Quarryville, he was the son of the late Paul and Jeannette Sturgis Zug. He was married to the late Hilda Eshelman Zug who died in 2007.

Paul served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Prior to his retirement he worked as a custodian at Warwick High School. He was a Lionel train enthusiast and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by a son: Robert, husband of Vicky Zug, of Willow Street; daughter: Dawn, wife of Michael Caldwell, of West Chester; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister: Lois Coe, of Philadelphia.

Funeral services were held on July 16 at Richard H. Heisey Funeral Home, Lititz. Burial will be at a later date.

Ray H. Siegrist66, formerly of Penn Township, Country Table manager

Ray Henry Siegrist, age 66, of Lancaster, went home to be with his Lord and savior Tuesday, July 10, 2012.

He was born in Penn Township, the son of the late J. Henry and Nora Pfautz Siegrist. Ray was a member of Crossroads Mennonite Church in Lancaster, where he had served as chairman of church council and treasurer the past years. He was a 1963 graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School. From 1966 until 1982 he lived in the Bronx, N.Y., where he was involved in youth ministry sharing God’s love and compassion. In 1983 he returned to Lancaster County and worked in the restaurant industry using his management skills, most recently at The Country Table Restaurant, Mount Joy. He also volunteered as a mentor at Water Street Ministries in Lancaster.

Ray is survived by three brothers: Wilbur, husband of Rachel Miller Siegrist, of Lititz; Harold, husband of Audrey Yoder Siegrist, of Emory, Texas; and Raymond, husband of Virginia Mummau Siegrist, of Brownsfield, Maine; and two sisters: Naomi, wife of Andrew Miller, of Manheim; and Mary Ann, wife of David Good, of Manheim. Ray will be greatly missed by his siblings and many nieces and nephews who adored their uncle.

Paul L. Myers79, United Zion resident, state electrician

Paul L. Myers, 79, of United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz, formerly of Rapho Township, unexpectedly went home to be with his Lord Saturday morning, July 14, 2012 at Lancaster General Hospital following declining health.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Ezra B. and Lottie Long Myers.

Paul was a 1951 graduate of Manheim Central High School, attended Millersville University and also received vocational training in various trades. Ultimately, he was employed as a Pennsylvania state employee as an electrician at the former Crippled Children’s Hospital and then by the Pennsylvania State Department of Corrections, both in Elizabethtown. He was a member and past president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Local No. 13 in Harrisburg. Early in his life, he was employed by the former Hamilton Watch Company in Lancaster. He attended Chiques Church of the Brethren in Manheim and served with Brethren Volunteer Service in Puerto Rico as a young man. In addition to being involved in the Pennsylvania Grange Association, Paul enjoyed farming as a hobby.

He is survived by two sons: Paul Lamar Myers Jr., of Marietta; and Alfred L. Myers, of Lancaster; six grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and a brother: Kenneth C. "Sonny" Myers, of Manheim.

Raymond J. McCarthy84, Brunnerville fire police member, nuclear control operator

Raymond J. McCarthy, 84, of Lititz, formerly of Pitman, N.J., entered into his eternal rest Saturday, July 14, 2012.

He was the loving husband of Gloria Regan McCarthy, and they celebrated 59 years of marriage in October of 2011.

Born in Jersey City, N.J., Raymond graduated from Dickenson High School and earned his Nuclear Certification, Gold Seal License. He was employed as a control operator at a nuclear power plant with the New Jersey utilities. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, a volunteer driver with Meals on Wheels, a member of the Brunnerville Fire Police for over 20 years, and a football coach for midget football in New Jersey. He also enjoyed golfing, antiques and refinishing furniture in his spare time.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children: Randall, husband of Sue McCarthy, of Lititz; Sharon, wife of Bill Ceravolo, of Wenonah, N.J.; and Ray McCarthy, Port St. Lucie, of Florida; two sisters: Mary Tweedie and Helen Maguire; three grandsons: Robert McCarthy, Dan (Maria) Ceravolo and James Ceravolo, all of New Jersey; and three great- grandchildren.

His brother: John McCarthy, preceded him in death.

Eugene O. Lange91, WWII vet, Luthercare resident, cabinet maker

Eugene O. Lange, 91, formerly of Denver, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2012 at Luthercare, Lititz.

He was born in Alton, Ill., to the late William and Rose Lange. Eugene was the husband of Margaret M. (Wiggin) Lange and the late Ruth M. (Hoffman) Lange .

Eugene was a member of Ephrata Bible Fellowship Church, Ephrata. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a life member of the Vero Beach, Fla., VFW Post. He enjoyed wood carving and travel. Eugene always made everyone smile and he loved to talk. He will be missed by all who ever met him. Eugene worked as a farmer, carpenter, cabinet maker, bakery worker and retired from John’s Manville Fiberglass Company of Defiance, Ohio, after 29 years of service.

In addition to his wife, Eugene is survived by a son: John F. Lange, husband of Joyce (Masthey), of Granby, Conn.; three grandsons: Chris Lange, of St. George, Ga.; Jeff Lange, of Tarrifville, Conn.; and Ethan Lange, of Granby, Conn.; a great-granddaughter: Madison Lange, of Yulee, Fla.; a sister: Rose M. Roehrig, of Defiance, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Lillian M. Johnstin101, Moravian Manor resident, farmer’s wife, oldest St. John’s member

Lillian M. Johnstin, age 101, passed into the arms of Jesus Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at Moravian Manor.

Lillian would have celebrated her 102nd birthday as she was born July 22, 1910, the daughter of Adam and Anna Brill Marley, Marietta.

Lillian was a "Marietta gal," attending school there and a member of the Episcopal Church. Following school, she worked in the silk mill in Columbia, walking or riding the trolley over Chiques Hill. Lillian married the late James F. Johnstin and moved to Maytown and became a farmer’s wife. Lillian was a wonderful cook, preparing large meals for the men helping to bring in crops at harvest time. Lillian joined St. John’s Lutheran Church in Maytown and was its oldest member. She enjoyed shopping with her grandchildren, entertaining her friends on the social ministry committee and going to Mount Gretna during the summer months.

Lillian is survived by her son: Tom, husband of Gloria Johnstin; her daughter: Pat Vogel; grandson: Jason, husband of Sylvia Johnstin; great-grandson: Sam; great-granddaughter: Lily; granddaughter: Stacy, wife of Bob Barton; great-granddaughter: Grace; her granddaughter: Sue, wife of John Frey; great-grandson: Andrew; great-granddaughter: Alyssa; and sister: Marion, a resident of ManorCare in Elizabethtown.

Paul G. Hess, M.D.94, Lititz Family Practice doctor, physician in Europe during WWII

Paul G. Hess, M.D., 94, of Lititz, passed away at Luther Acres on July 14, 2012.

Born in Terre Hill, he was the son of the late Harry W. and Elizabeth Good Hess. He was married for 70 years to Revenda "Tunner" Hess who passed away in February of 2012.

Paul received his B.S. from Elizabethtown College and his doctorate from Hahnemann Medical School. He served as Headquarters Co. physician in Europe with the U.S. Army during World War II. Dr. Hess began his practice in Lititz in 1946. With the addition of Dr. Swan and Dr. Holder, the practice became the home of a new family practice, Hess, Swan, & Holder. In 1976, the office became Lititz Family Practice and moved to its current location which in 1996 became known as the Lancaster General Medical Group. Paul retired in 1984.

He served on the boards of Farmers First Bank and Lititz Mutual Insurance Company and their affiliates: Penn Charter Mutual, Farmers & Mechanics Mutual and Livingston Mutual. In addition, he was also a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the American Medical Society. An avid golfer, he belonged to the Lebanon Country Club for many years.

Rhoda A. Burkholder84, United Zion resident, homemaker, waitress

Rhoda A. Burkholder, 84, of Manheim, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz.

Born in Penn Township, she was the daughter of the late Harry B. and Martha Sangrey Oberholtzer. She was the loving wife of Paul A. Burkholder and they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in October of this year.

A homemaker, Rhoda worked as a waitress at the Manheim Auto Auction and the former Lynden Diner, Manheim. She also worked at the former Hamilton Watch Co. Rhoda was a member of Speedwell Heights Brethren in Christ Church, Lititz. Her interests included quilting, gardening and she was a seamstress. She loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Linda, wife of Kenneth Koser, and June, wife of John "Sid" Achenbach, both of Ephrata; six grandchildren: Wesley Koser, Joanna Philpot, Melanie Heck, Jessica Achenbach, Neil Koser and Alison Koser; six great-grandchildren: Bradley and Katlyn Heck and Justin, Avery, Aidan, and Kam Koser; three sisters: Verna, wife of Eugene Merrick, of Wellsville, N.Y.; Jean, wife of Marlin Ginder, of Manheim; and Mary Anne, wife of Robert Gouchnauer, of Lancaster; and three brothers: Jay, husband of Rhoda Oberholtzer, of Lititz; Harry Jr., husband of Dorothy Oberholtzer, of East Petersburg; and Charles Oberholtzer, of Lititz, and Carole Oberholtzer, of Mountville; and a sister-in-law: June Oberholtzer, of Columbia. She was preceded in death by a brother: Clair Oberholtzer.

Anna S. Alexander87, Linden Hall teacher, laboratory technician

Anna S. Alexander, 87, of Lititz, passed away Monday, July 9, 2012 at Luther Acres.

She was born in Valley View, PA on May 7, 1925. She is the daughter of the late Dr. Irvin E. and Katie (Otto) Sausser.

Anna was a 1947 graduate of Dickinson College. She taught biology and chemistry for nine years at Linden Hall in Lititz and worked at Lancaster General Hospital for two years as a laboratory technician. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster. Anna was also an active member in the Iris Club and Garden Club in Lancaster.

Anna is survived by her daughter: Deborah L. Lilly; and husband: Lynn A. Lilly, of Conestoga; and two grandchildren: Tyler J. Graeff and Cassandra M. Graeff.

She was preceded in death by her late husband: James C. Alexander; as well as her sister: Lois E. Sausser Harring.

A memorial service was held on July 16 at Luther Acres Manor in the Chapel. Visitation will be held at the chapel from 10:30 to 11 a.m.
