Lititz ousts Ephrata to advance to NET quarters

By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer

Through their first 17 games this season, the Lititz Odd Fellows used just one player in the third spot of the batting order.

Ben Keyser.

But on Monday night, with Keyser traveling and unavailable for the Lititz Odd Fellows’ playoff game against the Ephrata Bandits, Drew Keller stepped into the three hole.

It proved to be a seamless transition, as Keller went 3-for-4 with three doubles, and the Odd Fellows, who placed seventh in the School League standings, pounded a season-high 19 hits en route to defeating Community League champ Ephrata 13-4 in a New Era Midget Tournament play-in game at Ephrata’s War Memorial Field.

Cleanup hitter Robert Gerofsky added a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with four RBI’s and two runs scored to help lead the way in the middle of the order.

"Keyser was probably our biggest bat this season," Odd Fellows’ skipper Bill Weismandel said, "and (Keller) showed up and went 3-for-4 with three doubles and Bob’s been in the middle of the lineup all year driving in runs, so they definitely did their jobs."

Daryl Weaver held off James Stoltzfus by just 16 seconds as he crossed the finish line in a time of 26:09 to capture top honors at the Freshburst Five-Mile Run last Saturday at Johnson & Johnson in Lititz.

The 39-year-old runner led a field of 263 finishers in the 17th edition of the five-mile race. Coupled with 49 finishers in the 5K walk, the event drew 312 total participants.

Erica Pearson, meanwhile, took first place in the women’s race, building a comfortable lead on the rest of her competition on her way to finishing in a time of 30:14. The 26-year-old averaged just over 6:00 per mile while out-distancing Annie Poland, 26, who placed second in a time of 32:02.

Weaver registered an average mile pace of nearly 5:14 over the relatively flat and fast course, which was good enough to outleg runner-up James Stoltzfus to the finish line on Lincoln Avenue. Stoltzfus, 31, posted a time of 26:25 and Tommy Pearson was close behind in 26:42.

Park board issues official statement: Fireworks problems were due to controller issues

The following press release, submitted by R. Ronald Reedy, president of the Lititz Springs Park Board of Trustees, was issued shortly after deadline for our July 12 issue:

The Lititz Springs Park Board and Clair Global met with John Kemps, president of Celebration Fireworks, along with members of his staff, regarding the pyromusical fireworks show held during the Fourth of July celebration in Lititz Springs Park. While many who attended the event were disappointed with the display, the park board members were searching for answers as to "just what happened" and why the show was not fully ignited.

Kemps and staff noted that the isolated problem was because of the fire controller known as FireOne. This controller is the same device that is used for the production of the fireworks displays at Disney World. The FireOne controller is the industry’s standard controller for large shows and for the pyromusicals. Following consultation with the FireOne manufacturer and Disney, it is believed that the problem was caused by noise on the control line to the firing modules. Celebration assured the park board that corrective steps will be in taken by using two fire controllers along with a 10 second "cue" from the sound crew followed by a small sacrificial device on the end of each leg. This will give enough time to correct any problems that may exist before the music starts.
