Phillies outlast Salsa in opening game of NET series
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
As Warwick Phillies 12U skipper Dana Clark put it, the baseball gods haven’t always been on his team’s side this summer.
On Monday, they were.
In the opening game of a best-of-three New Era Tournament qualifier series, Salsa appeared to defeat the Phillies when Bryan Menendez scored from third base on a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the seventh inning. But in a controversial ruling, the home plate umpire called Menendez out when he failed to slide and made contact with Phils’ catcher Justin Minnich.
"I did (agree with the ruling)," Clark said. "I felt as though there was no way my catcher would end up on his back without contact and the rule is clear that you need to avoid contact. And I didn’t feel as though the Salsa player made any attempt to do so."
Granted new life, the Phillies (9-8) capitalized, as Gabe Cicala stole second base and scored on back-to-back Salsa (12-5) throwing errors in the top of the eighth, and then pitcher Nick Breznak tossed a perfect inning in relief to nail down their wild 5-4 victory in Lancaster.

Kurtz pitches Lititz to 5-1 win over Manheim

Lititz base runner Caleb Metzler (right) avoids the tag of Manheim first baseman Trey Eberly while reaching base on a throwing error in the fourth inning on Sunday.
At 18 years old, they aren’t exactly grizzled veterans.
Regardless, the foursome of Louis Casnova, Derrick Shields, Andrew Geraghty and Brian Eshleman are still veterans of the diamond.
And they give the Lititz Legion baseball team a strong presence at the top of the lineup.
That was certainly the case last Sunday against back-yard rival Manheim, as those four players combined to go 6-for-13 while scoring four runs to help lead the Post 56ers to a 5-1 victory in District 10 American Legion action in Lititz.
"They’re all guys who have been playing for me for two, three years, so it’s nice to have that veteran (presence)," Lititz Legion coach Steve Chretien said. "Some of the older guys up there have played before and they’re pretty good players and have the opportunity to play at the next level."

This is believed to be Woodridge’s first Ephrata Relay championship of the new century, as they swept first place in all four relays (freestyle, backstroke, breastroke and medley) in the 11-12 boys, 13-14 boys, 9-10 girls and 13-14 girls.
In the team rankings, the Woodridge girls took first place with 211 points and the boys were a close second with 197 points — just one behind Overlook (198) — setting them up to grab the crown in the combined standings. Manheim finished in seventh place overall.

Teen has the write stuff
By: NOELLE BARRETT Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer
Cody Benjamin is a journalist. He has interviewed many athletes and agents over the past few years, and tries to write something new each day. Benjamin not only writes for his website, but also for the teen section of Lancaster Newspapers. Was it mentioned that he is only 18 years old?
Benjamin, a recent graduate of Warwick High School, and the son of Maurice and Rovena Benjamin and Sharon and Steve Painter, has been on the road to his journalism career since he was 14.
"I always liked writing since an early age," said Benjamin. "I started to document and record stuff with sports."
In January of 2009, Benjamin started his WordPress blog, Bleed Green, where he would write articles about his favorite NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles.
"When I started, it wasn’t anything serious," said Benjamin. "It was just a casual thing to write about the Eagles. Throughout the months and years, it got more serious."
What started out as ideas jotted down in a notebook and stories on his blog, turned into his website, also titled Bleed Green. He went from updating a few times a week to several times a day.
