Murder-suicide suspected in downtown Lititz
By: STEPHEN SEEBER Record Express Staff, Staff Writer
Investigators are unraveling details of an apparent husband-wife murder-suicide at a West Second Avenue row home.
The deaths reportedly occurred Sunday, but were not discovered until Tuesday.
Lititz police released the following report shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday:
"On Tuesday, April 17 at 12:52 p.m., Lititz Borough Police responded to the residence of 5 W. 2nd Ave. It was reported to police that the homeowners’ son had arrived at the home to find his mother, Susan Macferran, 62, and stepfather Keith Macferran, 48, deceased in their bedroom.
"Upon police arrival, it was confirmed that the male and female were deceased of apparent gunshot wounds. A crime scene was initiated inside the residence and the Lancaster County Crime Scene Forensic Unit assisted on the scene. Also assisting were the Lancaster County District Attorney’s office and Lancaster County Coroner’s office."
Autopsies were planned early Wednesday morning, but had to be pushed back until later in the day, beyond the Record Express’ final page deadline for this week’s issue. Lititz Detective John Schofield was on the scene of the autopsies, which were being conducted by Coroner Dr. Steve Diamantoni, when the Record Express went to press.

Manheim Central junior Kristin Robeson pressures an opponent for the ball during recent girls soccer action.
Getting scoring opportunities wasn’t a problem for the Warwick girls on Monday.
Scoring, however, was.
While Manheim Central capitalized for three first-half tallies, the Lady Warriors took the collar and suffered a 3-0 loss to their back-yard rival in a non-league game in Lititz.
Both teams generated three corner kicks and the Lady Barons had just one more shot (8-7) than Warwick, but goals by Brogan Garvey, Megan Herr and Maddy Novak stood as up the difference for Manheim Central.
"Being that Warwick is a very skilled and strong team, we were most pleased with our overall team play and the result," Manheim Central coach John Shetromph said. "We felt our offensive movement off the ball, our collective defensive shape on all parts of the field, and us winning 50/50 balls tilted the game to our advantage."
The victory improved Manheim Central to 7-3 overall (6-3 L-L), just one game behind second-place Donegal in Section Three in the L-L playoff chase.

MC girls survive scare from DutchmenSoftball
Aerika High belted a home run and the Manheim Central softball team eked out a 6-5 victory over Annville-Cleona on Monday in a Section Three-Four crossover game in Manheim.
The Lady Barons (7-0 L-L, 8-3 overall) jumped to a 5-1 lead with two in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth. Overall, they outhit the Little Dutchmen 11-4, but the Central girls also had four errors and A-C put together a four-run rally in the top of the fifth to pull even, 5-5.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Central pushed across the decisive run in support of winning pitcher Sara McKee, who struck out nine and walked two.
Last Friday, pitchers Erika Campbell and McKee combined on a three-hitter, leading the Central girls in an 8-1 win over Columbia.
Campbell pitched three innings for the win, striking out two and walking one, and then McKee finished up in relief.
Leading just 2-1 after four, the Lady Barons finally got some breathing room with three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away.

Warrior bats explode, hand Ephrata first league loss
By: TODD RUTH Record Staff truth.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
It was all about the approach.
In his pre-game speech Monday, Warwick Baseball Coach Matt Gale emphasized the importance of getting into good hitting counts against Ephrata senior pitcher Andre Hoover, a tall lefty with a good live fastball and a devastating breaking pitch.
"We talked about just staying back, because (Hoover) has really good off-speed stuff, and to look for the fastball. You don’t want to get behind against a guy like that."
Message received.
Warwick pounded out 11 hits over the first three innings against Hoover, who had not given up an earned run all season and was 3-0 coming into the game. Warwick led 9-2 when Hoover was finally lifted with two outs in the third, and the Warriors cruised from there en route to an eventual 9-3 victory at Ephrata’s War Memorial Field.
Derrick Shields went 4-for-5 with two RBI while Korey Johnson added a big two-run double to pace the Warriors, now winners of four straight. Even starting pitcher Zack Hurst got into the act with a 2-for-3, three RBI performance with the bat. Hurst, a "sub-marine pitcher," was equally impressive on the mound, scattering five Ephrata hits while striking out seven to earn the complete-game victory.

Warwick's Cassidy Godber rounds second base past Ephrata's Kim Robert and scores on a first-inning triple by Ashley Tshudy. Godber and Tshudy had two hits apiece in the Lady Warriors' 10-0 shutout of Ephrata.
Through four innings, Warwick coach Don Miller and Ephrata skipper Dan Jones were sharing each other’s pain.
Between the two teams, they had managed just two runs up to that point, and both coaches were scratching their heads wondering how to get more offense.
Finally, the Lady Warriors got some breathing room in the bottom of the fifth.
Capitalizing on two Ephrata errors and a walk, Warwick broke open a 2-0 game with a six-run outburst, leading them to a 10-0 six-inning shutout of their back-yard rival in a Section One-Two crossover in Lititz.
"We only had two runs … I was just looking to get an insurance run at that point," Miller said. "We didn’t really hit the ball hard until after they gave us those runs. They kinda gave it to us. Their pitcher (Jenna Yarger) pitched really well. We seemed to have a hard time getting good pitches to hit off of her. We weren’t putting good swings on the ball, I know that."

Streaks pull away from Warwick in second half

Warwick senior Jordan Nace battles for control of the ball against a Conestoga Valley defender during last week's action.
After a tough opening quarter, the Warwick boys had righted the ship.
They were feeling good about themselves when they cut Manheim Township’s four-goal lead to 4-2 with 1:56 left in the second quarter on Tuesday afternoon.
But then the Blue Streaks got a pair of tallies in the final 31 seconds of the half, and that turned out to be a back-breaker for the Warriors, as they went on to suffer a 12-3 loss in an L-L League game in Neffsville.
"I felt we really had some good momentum," Warwick coach Chris Schmehl said. "It was 4-0 and we cut it to 4-2, we were playing much better in the second quarter and we had really settled down from the beginning of the game. And then they scored those last two at the end of the quarter and it was kind of a back-breaker and it gave them the momentum that we had going into the second half."
