Two more PIAA state records fall as Cameron wins 50 free, 100 breast

By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer

Warwick’s Emily Cameron didn’t want to watch the girls 100 freestyle last Thursday.

Her friend, Hershey sophomore Meaghan Raab, was competing in that event, and with the two stars in a close battle for the Most Valuable Swimmer honors at the PIAA State Triple-A Championships at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium, Cameron didn’t want to put added pressure on herself.

Three events later, the Warwick junior was scheduled to compete in her final event, the 100 breaststroke, and she just wanted to swim her own race.

"I purposely went into the locker room and didn’t watch (Meaghan’s) race because I didn’t want to see her time," Cameron laughed. "That way it was kind of a suspense thing until after my race, so I didn’t have any pressure."

As it turned out, Cameron followed up her State gold medal in Wednesday’s 50 free with another in the 100 breast — giving her five total in her illustrious high school career. On top of that, she shattered the PIAA records in both events, touching the wall in the 50 free in 22.75 seconds to break the mark (22.80) set by Spring Grove’s Michele King in 2005, and then finishing the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.54 to wipe out the record (1:01.07) previously held by Wilson’s Kristen Woodring since 1999. She now holds PIAA state records, including the 200 Individual Medley.

Daniel captures two State medals Shatters school mark in 500 free

Paige Daniel

Former Manheim Central field hockey coach Katie Gerfen had no idea that Paige Daniel was competing at the PIAA State Double-A Swimming Meet last Friday and Saturday.

Daniel, a Manheim Central junior, had no idea that Gerfen would be calling.

Not only did Gerfen call, though, she did so at the perfect time for her former player on Friday night.

Although having won a fourth-place PIAA State medal in the girls 200 Individual Medley, Daniel wasn’t exactly thrilled with her time of 2:07.62.

But once arriving back at her Lewisburg hotel on Friday night, her spirits were lifted.

"(Coach Gerfen) just randomly called just to see how I was," Daniel said. "She didn’t know I was at States or anything. She was just like, ‘I haven’t talked to you for a long time and how are you?’ And I was pretty upset because of my 200 I.M. And she talked me through it and told me to just go into the next day feeling confident and only see positive results."

Georgia, Cal top Cameron’s college list

By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer

University of Georgia freshman Amber McDermott recently just won the silver medal in the 500 free at the NCAA Division-I Swimming Championships.

McDermott, though, is hoping to land an even bigger prize out of the pool.

That is, she’s trying to convince her friend, Warwick High School star junior Emily Cameron, a five-time PIAA State gold-medalist, to become a Bulldog.

Asked about the possibility of them being teammates at Georgia, Cameron said, "Maybe. We’ll have to see. (McDermott) would love that."

At this point, Cameron acknowledges that Georgia is at the top of her list. The University of California is next. And she has also looked at the University of Florida, another school known for its swimming program.

"Anything could turn in the next coming months, so we’ll see what happens," she said.

But Georgia, led by head coach Jack Bauerle, has the inside track at this point.
