Twenty-two officers with the newly-formed Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department took their ceremonial oath of office during a meeting in Clay Township last Thursday night.
Twenty-two police officers in one room; that doesn’t happen often.
While the new Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department — representing Warwick, Penn and Clay townships — has been up and running since Christmas, the public oath of office ceremony wasn’t held until Feb. 9, during the department’s monthly meeting at headquarters in Clay Township. Judge Joseph Madenspacher officiated.
"I don’t know about everybody else, but I feel pretty safe right now," Madenspacher said. "It is the police that are not just protecting us, but basically creating order where there would otherwise be lawlessness and anarchy."
Friends and family, along with Aiko from the K-9 unit, were in attendance.

Ice arrives Friday Chili judges ready their bowls for Saturday
Fire & Ice is here!
"Every event within the event is at an all-time high for sponsors and participants," says Dawn Rissmiller, co-founder and co-organizer. "It’s getting bigger and bigger every day."
Rissmiller and Tammy Boltz started Fire & Ice with Lititz Women in Business seven years ago, hoping it would take off and bring people downtown in the winter months.
"It really has become a highlight of the year," Rissmiller added. "We had people calling us back in July for room reservations and details to make sure they had the right weekend."
Thirty-one locations will have ice sculptures this year. Designs include a rooster, dump truck, pine tree, dragon ballet slippers and a giant angel throne … and that’s just a sampling. Live sculpting is also a big part of the event, with six sculptures being erected Feb. 17 during the Friday Night Block Party.
The block party starts at 5 p.m. with food, games and a variety of entertainment.

Weit’s trey boosts Warwick past MT Warriors qualify for Districts
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
Things were pretty much black and white for the Warwick boys last Wednesday.
Win and the Warriors would punch their ticket to the District Three Quad-A playoffs.
Lose and they would not.
Making the task even more daunting for the Warwick boys in their regular-season finale was that they were playing Section One champion Manheim Township.
"Going in, we kinda knew that we had to win to extend our season," Warwick coach Jeff Landis remarked.
So that was the scenario as Colby Weit got a pass in the corner from K’shawn Mickens with the fourth-quarter clock expiring. And when Weit’s 3-pointer ripped the bottom of the net at the buzzer, lifting Warwick to a thrilling 51-48 Section One win over the Streaks in Lititz, it set off a big celebration for the Warriors and their fans.
For the fourth time this season — including at the conclusion of wins over Solanco, Hempfield and Cedar Crest — Warwick’s student section rushed the floor to mob their players.

Warwick junior heavyweight Tom Devenney (top) will take a 27-2 record into this Saturday's Sectional Wrestling Tournament.
Trying to predict how many qualifiers you might get to the District Three Wrestling Tournament can be a tricky proposition.
Warwick and Manheim Central will both be competing this Saturday at the District Three Section Three Triple-A Tournament at Hempfield High School, where the top three place-finishers from each weight class will advance to Districts, to be held Feb. 24-25 at the Hersheypark Arena.
And looking ahead to the seeding meeting which was slated for last night (Wednesday), Warwick boss Ned Bushong believes that his squad has a good shot of having four wrestlers with top-three seeds.
"Realistically," Bushong said, "we should have two first seeds and two thirds."
But Warwick’s skipper is quick to add that anything can happen when the action gets underway at 8:30 a.m. this Saturday. Joining Warwick and Manheim Central will be Conestoga Valley, Donegal, ELCO, Ephrata, Hempfield, Lampeter-Strasburg, McCaskey, Manheim Township, Penn Manor and L-L Tournament champ Solanco.

Manheim Central's Renee Wiegand (33) attacks the basket against Hempfield's Lauren Trower and Lexi Scott (14).
The numbers didn’t seem to add up for the Manheim Central girls on Monday night.
They had an eye-popping 21 turnovers and scored just one field goal through more than 12 minutes of the second half.
Yet, somehow, with no time left on the clock, the Section Three champion Lady Barons had an opportunity to pull even with Section One runner-up Hempfield in an L-L League quarter-final round playoff game.
But in a pressure-packed situation, and with Manheim Central senior Renee Wiegand waiting out a prolonged delay before stepping to the foul line, her first free throw rimmed out and the Black Knights held on for a 33-31 nail-biter in Manheim.
""Renee is our leader, Renee is our warrior," Central coach Tom McCabe said. "I wish she could have shot (the free throws) right away. I don’t know what the problem was. She’s our best free throw shooter and she wants the ball in crunch time and I love that about Renee … (But) it shouldn’t have come down to the two free throws."

Nearly 24 hours after Maddie Schouten brought the house down last Friday, the Warwick junior was still walking on air.
"I talked to her Saturday afternoon," Warrior swim coach Mark Daum recalled, "and asked, ‘Did your feet hit the floor yet?’ She said, ‘No.’"
Who can blame her?
Seeded eighth in the girls 100 breastroke, Schouten pulled off an upset by claiming the gold medal in 1:09.35 at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Girls Swimming Championships at the Lititz recCenter. That equaled her lifetime best which she achieved at last year’s District Championships.
"I was blown away," said Schouten, who dropped her seed time of 1:12.82 by more than three seconds. "I had absolutely no idea where I was in the race. When I touched the wall and saw my time and everyone was screaming and I looked at my time again, I was like, ‘Oh my God.’"

Manheim Central's Paige Daniel swims to the L-L League gold medal in the 500 freestyle last Friday in a time of 5:11.59.
Manheim Central’s Paige Daniel and Ephrata’s Kylee Parsons had a pretty good rivalry going in the 500 free for a couple years at the L-L League Swimming Championships.
Two seasons ago, Parsons prevailed for the gold medal.
Last year, Daniel turned the tables.
Nothing lasts forever, though, and with Parsons focusing on other events last Friday at the Lititz recCenter, the MC junior admitted that it was weird carrying on without her.
"I love racing Kylee," Daniel said, "and I kinda wish she would’ve swam it this year so we could see what happens."
What happened was that Daniel became a two-time L-L champ in the 500 free, touching the wall in 5:11.59 easily ahead of Hempfield junior Valerie Urban, who finished in 5:17.69.
