Paul P. Vollmar88, WWII pilot, Vamco executive, mayor
Paul Philip Vollmar died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2011 at age 88.
Recently of Moravian Manor and long-time resident of Lancaster, he was born in Philadelphia to the late Verna (Spanninger) and Charles Edward Vollmar.
Vollmar served in the Navy as a Corsair pilot in the Pacific during World War II. His subsequent career was as an executive in manufacturing and engineering for his own company, Vamco, then with Proctor Silex and Woodstream. During his years in Delanco, N.J., he served on the town council and as mayor. His service organizations included Rotary International and several manufacturing organizations. He was very active in his church, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, for many years.
Mr. Vollmar is survived by his wife of 65 years: Doris (Moloney); sons: Paul, husband of Jody; Dennis, husband of Debbie; Don and Charles; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.
His brother: Charles; and sister: Lillian, predeceased him.
A memorial service was held at Moravian Manor, Lititz, on Jan. 7. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Health Ministries of Christ Church, 124 S. 13th Street, Harrisburg, PA 17104.

Samuel J. Sherts Jr.90, WWII veteran, Pleasant View resident
Samuel J. Sherts Jr., 90, formerly of Mountville, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim.
Born Sept. 17, 1921 in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Samuel J. and Anna D. (Werner) Sherts Sr. He was married to Evelyn R. (Kline) Sherts for over 69 years. Evelyn died Nov. 11, 2009.
A 1939 graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School, Samuel went on to become a veteran of World War II, proudly serving with the U.S. Navy.
He will be lovingly missed by two daughters: Judith S. Kendig, of Lancaster; Barbara, wife of Glenn Siegler, of Polk City, Fla.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandson.
Private funeral services and interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Howard D. Seiple93, WWII veteran, Armstrong retiree
Howard Donald Seiple passed from this life into the next as he slept in his favorite lounge chair at Luther Acres in Lititz Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012.
Born July 4, 1918 in Atglen, Mr. Seiple was in his 93rd year. He was the son of the late David Shaub Seiple and Bertha Loretta (Barr) Seiple. He is preceded in death by his wife, Leta (Zander) Seiple.
Howard was a lifetime member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, where he volunteered as an usher and mail helper until his death. Mr. Seiple was a World War II veteran, serving in the National Guard. Part of his assignment was to guard the city of New York from the roof of their tallest buildings from possible air attacks. Howard retired from Armstrong World Industries after 43 years of service.
Mr. Seiple is survived by two sons: William, husband of Frances Seiple, of New Holland, and John David, husband of Melanie Seiple, of Mount Joy; four grandchildren: Tara S. Emig, Jason E., Daniel S. and Nathan M. Seiple; and a brother: Kenneth E. Seiple.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Seiple is predeceased by three sisters: Pearl M., Esther Mae and June Louise Seiple.

Charles C. Rohrer70, worked for Armstrong, Raymark and Manheim Auto auction
Charles Christian "Chas" Rohrer, 70, of Manheim, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012 following a lengthy illness at Manor Care Health Services, Lancaster.
Born in Sporting Hill, he was the son of the late Raymond F. and Catherine H. Feary Rohrer. He was the loving husband of Pamela L. Habecker Rohrer, and they observed their 44th wedding anniversary in December of last year.
Chas worked for Armstrong World Industries, Lancaster; previously he was employed by the former Raymark Industries, Manheim. Following retirement at Armstrong, Chas worked for the Manheim Auto Auction. Chas graduated from Manheim Central High School in 1959. He was a member and past president of the Germania Band Club, Manheim, and was also a member of the Sonestown American Legion in Sonestown. Chas enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the family cabin in Laporte.
Surviving in addition to his wife is a son: Chadd C., husband of Brenda Martin Rohrer, of Lititz; a granddaughter: Mackenzie G. Rohrer; a brother: Richard Rohrer, of Manheim; and a sister: Karen Rohrer, of Manheim.
Preceding him in death is a brother: William "Blackie" Rohrer.

Edith M. Nekut85, RCA chemical engineer, accomplished baker
Edith Mayaud (Woolever) Nekut , a retired RCA chemical engineer and resident of Lancaster since 1950, passed away peacefully on her 85th birthday, Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011 while a resident of Moravian Manor’s Herrnhut South Wing Community, their social dementia unit.
Born Dec. 29, 1926 in Philadelphia, Edith was predeceased by her two husbands. Her first husband, Charles (Carl) Jean Gabriel Mayaud, a professor at Franklin and Marshall College, died in 1971. Anthony (Andy) G. Nekut, her second husband, an RCA electrical engineer, passed away in late 2001.
Edith graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1948 on full academic scholarship with a degree in Chemistry. She briefly lived in Cuba with Carl, who was teaching at the University of Santiago, before Castro took power. They then settled in Lancaster after Carl began teaching at Franklin & Marshall College, building a home together at the foot of Blossom Hill near Neffsville. After working briefly for Lorilliard, Edith joined RCA as a chemical engineer, retiring in 1975 after a distinguished career, where she received several patents. Edith was an accomplished cook and bread baker, teaching the latter for many years. She had quite a green thumb, filling her greenhouse (built by Andy) with orchids year-round. She and Andy had a prodigious vegetable garden. Edith was never without massive pots of flowering plants and herbs wherever she lived.

Joyce Mumma70, ECH food service employee, enjoyed antiquing
Joyce L. Mumma, 70, formerly of Akron and Denver, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 in United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz.
She was born in Fivepointville, a daughter of the late Howard G. and Anna (Pierce) Brendle. Her husband, Kenneth Lee Mumma Sr., died Jan. 17, 2010.
A member of Reamstown Church of God, she worked many years in food service with Ephrata Community Hospital and also Cinderella Knitting Mill and Art Pannebecker Auction Service. Joyce enjoyed traveling, antiquing and time with her family.
Surviving are sons: Robert Allen, husband of Elizabeth DeAnn (Moore) Mumma, of Oceanside, Calif.; and Randy S., husband of Wanda Sue (Hufford) Mumma, of Denver; grandchildren: Casey, Anna, Kendall, Elizabeth, Bobby Ray, Joshua and Amanda; great-grandson: Josiah; and a sister: Margaret McEvoy, of Ephrata.
She was also predeceased by a son: Kenneth L. Jr.; sister: Mary Duing; and brothers: Walter, William and Howard Brendle.
Funeral services were held on Jan. 6 from Reamstown Church of God, Stevens, with her pastors, the Rev. Arthur T. Karick and the Rev. Joel R. Hainley, officiating. Burial took place in Muddy Creek Cemetery, Swartzville.

Grace B. Miller97, Stiegel Roses and Penryn Fire Auxiliary member
Grace B. Miller, 97, formerly of Manheim, passed away Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz.
Born in Leola, she was the daughter of the late John and Barbara Keener Neff. She was the wife of the late Harry I. Miller, who died in 1996.
Grace was a faithful member of Salem United Methodist Church, Manheim, for 57 years, and she served on the kitchen committee. She was also a member of Stiegel Roses Senior Citizens Group, Manheim, and Farm Women #2. Grace was a former member of Penryn Fire Company Auxiliary. Her interests included quilting and sewing.
Surviving are two sons: Warren J., husband of Ada E. Miller, of Lititz; and Gerald L., husband of Rita M. Miller, of Manheim; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family.
She was preceded in death by a son: Donald Miller; a brother: Harry Neff; and two: sisters: Mabel Horst and Ada Buckwalter.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral service at Salem United Methodist Church, 140 N. Penn St., Manheim, on Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Melinda L. McKonly officiating. Interment will take place in Hernley Mennonite Cemetery, Rapho Township.

Gustav E. Lachman96, Lockheed Martin engineer, handyman
Gustav E. Lachman, 96, of Manheim, died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011 at Conestoga View Nursing and Rehabilitation, Lancaster.
Born in Coatesville, he was the son of the late James Calvin Sr. and Laura M. Rhoads Lachman.
Gustav worked as a mechanical engineer in the aircraft industry for Lockheed Martin Corporation. He also worked for Pringle Electrical Manufacturing Company in Fort Washington. Gustav enjoyed the out of doors and spending time in nature; he loved walks in the woods and bird watching. Following retirement he was a part-time handyman; he could fix all types of things for friends and neighbors.
Surviving are five daughters: Alice Lachman, of Naugatuck, Conn.; Daryl Lachman, of Aberdeen, N.C.; Diane Tedone, of Fort Myers, Fla.; Theresa Kolenda, of Levittown; Susan Lachman, of Fort Myers, Fla.; three sons: Stephen, husband of Laura Lachman, of Manheim; James, husband of Sabine Lachman, of Levittown; Charles Lachman, of Harleysville; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great- granddaughter.
Preceding him in death is a son: Gustav E. Lachman Jr.; five brothers: Carl, Ion, James Calvin Jr., John and Philip Lachman; and a sister: Ruth Lloyd.

Helen D. Gibble88, Colebrook-Terry seamstress
Helen Demmy Gibble, 88, of Penryn, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim.
Born in Penn Township, she was the daughter of the late Hiram and Minnie Ruhl Demmy. She was the wife of the late James Gibble, who died in 1991.
Helen worked as a seamstress at the former Colebrook-Terry Manufacturing, Brownstown and Akron, and the former Par-mat, Manheim. She was a member of Jerusalem Church, Penryn, and a former member of the Penryn Fire Company Auxiliary. Helen enjoyed traveling on weekends to watch stock car races at the former Reading Fair Grounds. She was an avid NASCAR fan, especially watching her favorite driver, Jeff Gordon. Helen also enjoyed listening to country music, especially George Strait. She loved to call and talk to DJ Michael C. Anthony from 101 The Rose radio station. Helen enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving are two daughters: Connie G., wife of Richard E. Martin, and Mary A. Givler, both of Penryn; three grandchildren: Shannon Lee, husband of Jeri Martin, of Penryn; Gail, wife of Sean T. Warner, of West Chester; James Vincent Martin, husband of Raina Colton, of Summerville, S.C.; and ten great- grandchildren: Ashley, Kelsie, Reilly, Colin, Nina, Jack, Jude, Kelly, Raquel and Ashton.

Locals win big at Farm Show

The Pennsylvania Farm Show got off to a great start for local residents.
Elizabeth Gallagher of Lititz was a big winner this year. Her awards in the Rabbit Department include: Youth Classes, first in French Angora-Colored; fifth in Californian; first in Mini Rex-Blue; second in Mini Rex-Blue; third in Mini Rex-Broken; and first in Mini Rex-Castor and Opal. She won first in Youth Best of Variety for Mini Rex-Opal; first in Youth Best Opposite Sex of Variety in Mini Rex-Castor and Opal; and first in Youth-Best of Breed, French Angora.
Other area winners in the Rabbit Department were: Bryan Kerdeman of Hare Force One, Manheim, first in Youth Classes, Dutch-Tortoise; third in Holland Lop-Solid; first in Youth Best Opposite Sex of Variety, Dutch-Tortoise; and first in Holland Lop-Solid; and Brianna Sauder, first in Youth Classes, Mini Lop-Solid Pattern.
