Parry, Big 10 champs honored in ring ceremony
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
It started with a simple email.
Three years later, Ashley Parry has found a family away from home.
A 2008 Warwick High School grad and a senior at Michigan State University, Parry is a member of the staff with the Lady Spartans’ basketball team. Following two years as a team manager, she is currently an intern with the Director of Basketball Operations and doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work for the squad.
"I knew I wanted to do something (at Michigan State) to help an athletic team in some way, and it’s a really big university, obviously," Parry said. "So I just started e-mailing people seeing if they needed any help. I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into intially, but the basketball team really welcomed me with open arms and it has been a great activity for me the past three years … We’re a very tight-knit group."
For some icing on the cake, Parry was among the players, staff, adminstrators and special guests who received a ring honoring the Lady Spartans’ Big Ten regular-season championship in 2010-11 at Michigan State’s Breslin Center on Sunday, Nov. 6.

Despite inexperience, Barons hope to be competitive

Manheim Central senior Jordan Mellinger (left), who averaged 4.1 ppg last year, will be counted to help lead the Barons in 2011-12.
Chris Sherwood likes professional sports as much as the next person.
But Manheim Central’s boys basketball coach is quite the ambassador for high school sports as well.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt being able to lean on an exciting 37-36 upset of Cocalico like the Barons had last year in the L-L playoffs.
"I always tell kids, ‘There’s nothing better than high school sports,’" said Sherwood, who is entering his fourth season with the team. "And when you can get those atmospheres, they remember those and they want to get back and play in that type of setting. We can take off of that. It’s an incentive for guys to work hard in the off-season."
Hard work isn’t a problem for this year’s Manheim Central boys.
Experience, however, might be an obstacle for the Barons in 2011-12.

Young Warriors hope to profit from athleticism
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
The Warwick boys are taking baby steps as they prepare for the 2011-12 basketball season.
They are treating it as the marathon that it is, and not a sprint.
"We have long-term goals that we discuss amongst ourselves," said Warwick fifth-year coach Jeff Landis (43-53 overall). "But right now the main goal is to get better every day. Everyday, every play, we’re working hard and improving ourselves."
It should come as no surprise that the Warriors are taking things slow this winter. Coming off a 2010-11 season in which they graduated nine seniors from an 11-11 squad (9-7 Section One), the young Warwick boys are bringing back no returning starters.
In fact, Warwick has just two seniors (Jared Grosh and Derrick Shields) on its current roster. So Landis and his assistants have been breaking things down a little bit more at practice in the early going this year.
"There’s more teaching that’s going on at practice," Landis said. "But that’s what we need to do right now. There’s two or three new kids to the program and even some of the lingo is different, so there’s a little more teaching going on, but that’s fine. This group works extremely hard and once we have everything figured out, I think there will be some good things that happen."
