Downtown Lititz was packed Monday night for the annual Halloween parade, and a group of young dancers stole the show with their rendition of Michael Jackson’s "Thriller."
It was a festive fall atmosphere for the community event, hosted by the Lititz Lions Club. Pumpkin pie sales were brisk and the judges (Judy Mentzer, Trudy Hahn and Barbara Shenk), stationed at Sturgis Lane, had some tough decisions to make. But in the end, they awarded the first place grand prize to the spirited choreography of the Lititz Academy of Dance.
With rain threatening earlier in the day, the decision to move forward with the parade as planned was made Monday morning, when the Lions’ parade committee met with Lititz Police Chief William Seace.

Fat Tuesday Borough looking for grease-dumping culprits
By: GARY P. KLINGER Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer
Out of site, out of mind. Well, not exactly.
What most people have become accustomed to flushing down their drains and into the sewage system is increasingly becoming a challenge for local sewage facility operators.
In the past, residents would flush old medications down the toilet or put unwanted cooking scraps containing fats, oils and greases down their drains. Apparently, they still do.
There is growing concern that such practices not only threaten local waterways, it creates a dangerous and potentially expensive situation at waste water treatment plants.
Lititz Borough Council was briefed Tuesday night on the growing problem. The main issue, according to Severn Trent, independent operator of the local waste water treatment facility, is the appearance of an alarming amount of discarded grease and its detrimental effect on the plant’s equipment.
Severn Trent’s Todd Kauffman addressed this in a letter to both the borough and Warwick Township.
"The Lititz wastewater treatment plant continues to receive slug loads of grease, causing significant disruption to the screenings removal equipment in the plant headworks," he wrote. "This ultimately results in a major clean-up effort by the treatment plant personnel."

Warwick Township's redesigned police vehicles are ready to roll. The new regional force, which combines Warwick, Penn and Clay townships, will be up and running by the beginning of 2012.
The new Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department — which will comprise Warwick, Penn and Clay townships — is nearly ready to roll.
Vehicles are being outfitted with the new logos, uniforms are almost ready, and it appears the process will be complete by the end of this year.
Warwick Township’s Police Chief David Steffan, who will head the regional force, updated the township supervisors during their Oct. 19 meeting. He said work continues, with graphic designs for the new force nearly complete. These new graphics will create the look of the new unified force and will be seen on signs, cars and uniforms. Police cruisers from each of the participating townships will receive the new graphics. New designs for uniforms are now also complete, with the process of ordering the correct sizes for officers underway. Steffen hopes to have all officers uniformed by Dec. 1.

Penn Manor turns back WarwickFootball
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
Warwick appeared to have things going its way.
Having cut Penn Manor’s lead to 20-13 just before the half on a nice touchdown reception by senior Brady Forney, the Warriors pinned the Comets at their own 10-yard line to start the second half.
But PM, led by quarterback Adam Sahd, answered with a 90-yard scoring drive to make the hill a little steeper for Warwick and the Comets went on to earn a 34-20 win in a Section One game in Millersville last Friday.
"They put together a pretty impressive drive," Warwick coach Bob Locker said. "They made a couple adjustments offensively at halftime. We were kinda giving up the flats, but by design. They took advantage of it and it was a very nice drive."
Although Penn Manor (3-2 L-L, 5-3 overall) only had a slim edge in total yards, 312-309, the Comets won the turnover battle while picking off three Warrior aerials.
The hosts also got a big game out of Sahd and wide receiver Daulton Parmer (8 receptions, 104 yards, TD). The Comets’ junior signal-caller completed 13-for-20 passes for 142 yards, while throwing for a TD and running for another, and he moved the chains on several third-and-long situations.

An L-L double
Bruce Morgan
Record Express
Sports Editor What started out as a frustrating trip to Manheim Central last Saturday actually turned out to be pretty good.
As I pulled into the parking lot near the stadium in plenty of time for the Lancaster-Lebanon League boys soccer finals and rummaged through my belongings, I realized that I didn’t have a couple of key items. In my haste to get out the door for my daughter’s 9 a.m. soccer game and then to Warwick’s biggest game of the year, my tape recorder and press pass stayed behind.
Maybe it was a hunch that the Warriors were going to beat Hempfield to win their first League championship, but I didn’t want to be without a tape recorder for such an important game. Life is so much easier when you’re not forced to scribble notes, only to miss half of what is being said, and then use even less when you can’t decipher what the heck was written on the tablet.

Jordan Loose was just trying to get the ball to one of Warwick’s strikers in front of the Hempfield goal cage.
The Warwick senior got so much more.
When Hempfield senior back Jason Bleacher tried to head it out of the box, the ball actually floated backward over Black Knights’ keeper Billy Heavner for an own goal.
"I wasn’t really planning on scoring on it, but I guess the luck just went my way," Warwick’s senior back recalled.

Lady Barons fall to Streaks in L-L quarters
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
After knocking off Garden Spot in a playoff match for the Section Two crown last Friday, Manheim Central was riding a wave of confidence going into the L-L playoffs.
Unfortunately for the Lady Barons, it wasn’t meant to be in a League quarterfinal-round playoff game against Manheim Township on Monday night. They battled back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits, but ultimately suffered a 3-2 loss (25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-8) to the Blue Streaks in Manheim.
"I want to say that any other time we match up with Manheim Township, I think we take them," Manheim Central coach Laurie McClure said. "But it just wasn’t our night. We didn’t quite have the blocking we needed. We had too many lags where we left them get too far of a lead, which can never be good against a quality team like that."
McClure believed her squad matched up well with the Streaks, with both teams featuring a strong setter (MC’s Renee Wiegand vs. MT’s Erika Schlager) and a strong middle (MC’s Kaitlyn Gochenauer vs. MT’s Devon Schneider).

After scoring the game-winning goal in OT last Saturday against Berks Catholic, MC's Paige Daniel (far right) gets congratulated by teammates Morgan Mumau, Katelyn Grazan and Brittiny Griffith.
It would have been understandable if Manheim Central field hockey players Mattie Berger and Kylee Garber had some anxiousness on Monday night.
When starter Savannah Ford suffered an injury in practice, Lady Barons’ coach Sam Shober told those two they would be filling in for Tuesday’s District Three Double-A first-round playoff game.
As it turned out, each girl scored a goal, and Garber’s tally with 13:02 left proved to be the game-winner as 13th-seeded Manheim Central defeated 4th-seeded West York 3-2 at Central York High School.
"Obviously after it happened at practice yesterday, we let them know what to expect and both of them did a wonderful job filling those positions," Manheim Central coach Sam Shober said.

Second-half outburst lifts Warwick in DistrictsField Hockey
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor bmorgan.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
At halftime on Tuesday, Warwick field hockey coach Bob Derr challenged his players to dominate the second half.
Apparently, they listened with open ears.
While building a big advantage in both shots (13-6) and penalty corners (10-3), the 3rd-seeded Lady Warriors erupted to score four goals after the break en route to a 5-0 shellacking of 14th-seeded Governor Mifflin in a District Three Triple-A first-round playoff game at Penn Manor.
The win sends Warwick (18-3) to the District quarter-finals for the first time since 2008. The Lady Warriors, who suffered back-to-back first-round losses the past two years, will face 6th-seeded Red Lion (18-2), a 3-1 winner over Conestoga Valley, at Governor Mifflin High School at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Coming off the emotional high of winning the League crown last Thursday, combined with a sub-par practice on Monday and the distraction of that night’s Lititz Halloween parade, Derr had his concerns about facing the Governor Mifflin (14-7).
And although Warwick (18-3) led 1-0 at the half on Emma Rissinger’s tally with 10:15 elapsed, on assists from Marissa Lutz and Liz Wenger, they weren’t on top of their game.

Just after beating Penn Manor keeper Karla Mylin for the L-L clinching goal with 5:19 left in OT, Warwick senior Emma Rissinger (far left) celebrates with teammate Bethany Han (9).
Warwick’s second corner of OT didn’t exactly unfold the way it was designed.
But the Lady Warriors aren’t complaining.
Showing a keen sense of improvisation with just 5:19 left in the extra session last Thursday, the Warwick girls got a tap-in goal from senior Emma Rissinger on a semi-lift from Alyssa Manley, and that was the difference in a 2-1 victory over Penn Manor for the Lancaster-Lebanon League championship at Warwick High School in Lititz.
"That was a little muffed up penalty corner, but it still turned out OK, so I’ll take it," Warwick coach Bob Derr said. "I’ll have to look at the film. Maybe I’ve got to do that again."
