Lawrence M. Thompson88, Luther Acres resident, WWII veteran, engineer

Lawrence (Larry) Merle Thompson peacefully passed away at his home in Lititz Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011.

Formerly of Lancaster, he lived at Luther Acres Retirement Community in Lititz for the past 11 years.

Larry was born in Milo, Maine, on September 14, 1923. Larry’s life was one of commitment to his family, church and community. He recently celebrated 60 years of marriage with his wife, Anna Laura (Neidert), formerly of Reading.

He graduated as valedictorian from Richmond High School and attended Quoddy Vocational School. He worked at Presque Isle Air Force Base until serving in the U.S. Navy as a radioman third class on the seaplane tenders U.S.S. Suisun and U.S.S. St. George, which was one of the first 10 ships to enter Tokyo Bay following the Japanese surrender during WWII.

Chester A. Siegrist93, WWII veteran, RCA retiree

Chester A. Siegrist, 93, of Manheim, and formerly of Lebanon, died peacefully at his son’s home Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011.

Born in Lebanon, he was the son of the late Adam G. Siegrist and the late Esther M. Siegrist Royer. He was the loving husband of the late Helen M. Logan Siegrist, who died in January of this year.

Throughout his life, Chet worked in the visual electronic technology field developing products and technology for television stations and working for the former RCA Corporation. Chet served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 572nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Division know as the "Hellcats."

Surviving is a son: Bradford A., husband of Elaine Saylor Siegrist, of Manheim; three grandchildren: and four great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are two sisters and one brother.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Chester’s graveside service at the Covenant/Greenwood Cemetery, Route 72, north of Lebanon, in Lebanon Township on Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m.

Kathryn A. Row75, United Zion resident, Red Hat member

Kathryn A. Row, 75, of Lititz, passed away Monday, Sept. 5, 2011 at United Zion Nursing Home after a brave fight with lung cancer.

Born in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Katherine (Volmer) Reardon. Kathryn was the wife of the late Dr. Harry G. Resh, who died in 2002, and later the late Richard J. Row, who died in 2010.

Kathryn worked alongside her first husband for many years running his practice. After his retirement, she established her own business, Kreative Appliqués, which she enjoyed for 12 years. She was a member of Lititz Church of the Brethren, Red Hat Society and Sweet Adeline’s. She enjoyed oil painting, traveling and wintering in Arizona.

Kathryn is survived by three children: Harry R. "Rick," husband of Judy Resh, of Manheim; Susan, wife of Michael Bingeman, of Lititz; and Linda Raines, of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; and a brother-in-law: Jim, husband of Carol Row, of Lititz.

She was preceded in death by a brother: Richard Reardon.

A memorial service will be held on Oct. 1 at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be private at Old Zion Church Cemetery.

Nora M. Myer100, farmer, Minnich’s Bakery employee

Nora M. Myer, 100, formerly of Newport Road, Lititz, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 at the Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community, Manheim, after several years of declining health.

Born in Penn Township, she was the daughter of the late Phares and Clara Minnich Graybill. She married Earl L. Myer in 1938 and they farmed together until his death in November of 1955.

Nora continued farming until 1963, when she moved off the farm and her sons took over the operation. She received a full-time job at Brethren Village and worked in a food service supervisor position, retiring after 15 years. Following retirement she then worked another 10 years, part-time, at Minnich’s Farm Bakery in Lititz.

Nora was a member of the White Oak Church of the Brethren, where she was active in the sewing circle. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, knitting and quilting. She made a quilt and an afghan for each of her children and grandchildren. She was the happiest when her hands were busy: volunteering at Manheim Meals on Wheels, Transport for Christ, Church of the Brethren relief organizations, making and donating many quilts to local benefit auctions.

R. Diane Miller81, Fuller retiree, formerly of Elm

R. Diane Miller, 81, formerly of Elm, passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim.

Born in Chester County, she was the daughter of the late George and Pearl Riley Miles. She was the wife of the late Glenn R. Miller who died in 2003.

Diane retired after 30 years from the Fuller Company, Manheim. She was a 1947 graduate of Manheim Central High School and she was a member of Jerusalem Church, Manheim. She enjoyed golfing, dancing at the Newmanstown Social Club, boating and traveling to the Chesapeake Bay and Florida Keys.

Surviving are two sons: D. Scott, husband of Cheryl Miller, and Randy L., husband of Jill Miller, both of Lititz; five grandchildren: Christian, Kathryn, Caroline, Jennifer and Rebecca; and a sister: Darlene, wife of David Eckert, of Mt. Gretna.

She was preceded in death by a brother: George Miles.

Her memorial service was held at the Buch Funeral Home, Manheim, on Sept. 28, with Pastor Alan J. Yudt officiating. Interment took place in Penryn Cemetery.

John H. Grose86, Wilbur retiree, WWII veteran

John H. Grose, 86, of Lititz, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011.

He was the husband of Mary Wert Grose, with whom he celebrated 63 years of marriage. Born in Thompsontown, he was the son of the late Samuel and Lydia Grose. He originally lived in Port Royal before moving to Lancaster County.

John was employed by Wilbur Chocolate Co. in Lititz for 27 years prior to retiring in 1987. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church in East Petersburg. He served in the U.S. Army in Japan at the end of World War II. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors in addition to his wife are sons: Rev. Don, husband of Rita Wert; and Daniel, husband of Nila Grose; grandchildren: Anthony, Kelly, Mary, Joshua, Johnny and Ronald; three great-grandchildren; and a sister: Edna Nace.

Funeral services were held at Grace E.C. Church on Sept. 27. Interment will be private.

Byron R. Detwiler71, Millersville professor

Byron R. Detwiler, 71, of Manheim, Professor Emeritus of French at Millersville University, died Monday, Sept. 2011 after an illness of one week.

He was born and raised in Lancaster, the son of Byron Y. Detwiler and Kathryn Murphy Detwiler. He attended McCaskey High School and Millersville University and then pursued graduate study at the University of Pennsylvania and in France. He taught at Millersville in the Department of Foreign Languages for many years until his retirement. Byron will be remembered by his many friends and former Millersville colleagues as a gracious host, a superb cook in both the Lancaster County and the French traditions, and a passionate gardener. He will be missed.

He is survived by a brother: Jere K. Detwiler, of Virginia; and a sister: Nancy R. Moore, of Massachusetts.

Max L. Steininger86, WWII veteran, United Zion resident

Max L. Steininger, 86, of Ephrata, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 at United Zion Nursing Home in Lititz.

He was born in Paxtonville, Snyder County, to the late Charles and Minnie (Kuhns) Steininger and was the husband of Fern (Fasnacht) Steininger.

Max was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ephrata. He was a member and past commander at Ephrata VFW Post 3376. Max worked at Glen-Gary Brick for 48 years and then worked part-time at Ephrata Agway.

A veteran of WWII as a Navy Seabee, he served in the Pacific on Tinian, Molakai and Okinawa islands.

In addition to his wife, Max is survived by a son: Dennis, husband of Peggy Steininger of Brownstown; a brother: Rod Steininger of Akron; two sisters: Carman, wife of Charles Reddig of Akron, and Judy, wife of John Royer of Mt. Airy; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Kimble, and two brothers, James and Ben Steininger.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 30, 7 p.m. at the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1331 W. Main St., Ephrata, with Pastor Jeffrey H. Goodman officiating. Private interment will take place in the Lincoln Cemetery.

Carl F. Schaefer89, Lititz American Legion member

Carl F. Schaefer, 89, of Stevens, passed away Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 at Denver Nursing Home.

He was born in Lancaster to the late Charles and Elizabeth (Metzger) Schaefer and was the husband of the late Marion Alverta (Eichelberger) Schaefer, who passed away Dec. 24, 2001.

Carl served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 213th Coast Artillery Anti Aircraft division. He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Akron. Carl held memberships at the VFW Post 7294, Millersville, the American Legion Cloister Post 429 and the American Legion Post 56 in Lititz.

Carl was an avid bowler, having bowled in various tournaments, and was also a Philadelphia Sports fan. During his working years, he worked for Armstrong World Industries for 18 years, operated an auto garage from 1969 to 1976 and most recently did maintenance work for Valleybrooke Estates until his retirement.

Carl is survived by a daughter: Jeanne, wife of Leroy Kennedy, of Long Neck, Del.; a son: Carl Douglas, husband of Nanci (Cooch) Schaefer, of Lancaster; six grandchildren: Penny Gockley, Sheri Heagy, LuCinda Martin, Anita Warnick, Kent Terry III and Amber Fasig; 14 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brother: Eli, husband of Pearl Schaefer, of Willow Street; and a sister: Dorothy, wife of Donald Fellenbaum, of Lancaster.

Andrew J. Glassmyer21, Warwick grad, worked at LGH

Andrew J. Glassmyer, 21, of Lititz, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011 at his residence.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Margaret Glassmyer Minnich, wife of Michael T. Minnich of Lititz; and Dennis Frymoyer of Mountville.

A graduate of Warwick High School, he attended Albright College, enjoyed baseball, and was an avid Phillies fan. He worked at Lancaster General Hospital and was earlier employed at the Giant Food Store in Lititz.

Survivors include his mother, father, stepfather and sisters: Jess and Jo-Ann Pontius, Akron; and step-brothers: Cody and Hunter Minnich, Elizabethtown.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the Richard H. Heisey Funeral Home, 216 S. Broad St., Lititz. A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Woodward Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes contributions be made to the funeral home to assist with funeral costs.
