Welcome aboard Chief Steffen sworn in during supervisors’ meeting
By: GARY P. KLINGER Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer
District Judge Dan Garrett was on hand at the Aug. 17 supervisors meeting to swear in newly hired Warwick Township Police Chief David Steffen.
Steffen, who began his new job Monday, Aug. 15, was supported by friends and family as he stood to take the oath of office. He was recently hired following the unanimous vote of township supervisors.
In an interview with Chief Steffen it was readily clear that the fit between the township and its new chief is solid. He most recently worked for the Northern York County Regional Police Department, spending the past 11 years as commander of the criminal investigations unit. In addition, he has garnered supervisory experience overseeing officers in a patrol capacity and management of civilian staff. But Steffen also brings administrative strengths to his new role with a background in records management and policy development.
"I have in my career path been very fortunate," said Steffen. "I have always had an organization that was supportive of change, growth and development of the careers of the officers that they employed. These characteristics were instilled in me and my co-workers. In addition, I was provided the freedom and guidance to do new things, to explore and employ better ways to accomplish our mission. I understand and have thrived in the delivery of police services in a dynamic and high demand environment."

Community members sought for committees
A unique feature of the Warwick School Board is its committee structure. Four standing committees — education, student activities, building and property, and finance and legal — meet monthly to focus on specific areas of concern to our schools.
Each of the committees is comprised of board members, school administrators, teachers and community members. This composition allows for diverse thinking and broad-ranging discussion. Although committee meetings are not decision-making sessions, recommendations made by the committees provide a basis for school board consideration and action.
Warwick School District is currently seeking community candidates to fill several openings that exist on the following district board committees:
? The Building and Property Committee meets on the second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. and deals with all areas of the maintenance, construction and renovation of district buildings and grounds.
? The Education Committee meets the second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. and deals with areas of curriculum, grade reporting and various educational program requirements for students in the classroom.
? The Finance and Legal Committee meets the second Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. and deals with all financial planning, budgeting, taxing and legal matters related to the school district.

Cable dispute heading to court Newport Commons owner says residents will have a choice
By: STEPHEN SEEBER Record Express Staff, Staff Writer
The ongoing debate over TV and Internet service in Newport Commons will continue in Lancaster County court next Monday.
Blue Ridge Communications, the current cable provider for residents in the Warwick Township apartment complex, confirmed the Aug. 29, 2 p.m. hearing. Those who want to testify should show up at the courthouse in Lancaster at 1:45 p.m.
"Apparently, things have taken kind of a challenging turn, and we’re definitely going to have to go to court," said a Blue Ridge representative Tuesday.
Two weeks ago, the Record Express reported that residents of the complex were upset because management was forcing them to switch their TV and Internet service from Blue Ridge to Windstream (formerly D&E) starting Sept. 6, which would cause them to lose some programming, including daily Philadelphia Phillies coverage on Comcast Sportsnet.
Mike Glass, owner of the development, said that’s not the case. On Tuesday, he told the Record Express that residents will have a choice, and he’s disappointed that the problem has reached this point.
"Blue Ridge has chosen to take an extremely aggressive approach to resolving this matter," said Glass, "and it has been counterproductive and not appreciated."

Did you feel it? Area residents felt 5.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Virginia
By: JESSICA ROSE SPANGLER Record Express Staff, Staff Writer
Around 2 p.m. Tuesday, people from North Carolina to New York felt the effects of a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that hit northwest of Richmond, Va.
Early reports say that the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were among the areas evacuated. All memorials and monuments on the National Mall were evacuated and closed as well.
Weather.com reported "the U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was half a mile deep. Shaking was felt… all over the East Coast… There were no immediate reports of injuries. It was centered near Louisa, Va., which is northwest of Richmond and south of Washington. In New York, the 26-story federal courthouse in lower Manhattan began swaying and hundreds of people were seen leaving the building."
"A ‘considerable amount’ of water from a water pipe has flooded two corridors of the Pentagon, according to an announcement in the building. The National Cathedral in Washington is damaged. And Dominion Generation, which operates the North Anna nuclear power station in central Virginia a few miles from the epicenter of the earthquake, is trying to reach operational staff at the plant, according to a company spokesman. Landlines to the plant appear to be down," reported CNN.com.

Greta Weidemoyer, a Second-Team All-Star selection in Section One last year, will be a key player at middle hitter for Warwick this fall.
The Warwick girls volleyball team had a nice streak going up until last year.
For the first five years that Jen Wanner took over as the Lady Warriors’ head coach, they had qualified for the playoffs.
Unfortunately, that run ended in 2010 when the Warwick girls finished fourth in the Section One standings with a 4-6 record.
One year later, that is a source of motivation as they begin preparations for the new season.
