Warwick forward Emma Rissinger (center), shown here going to the net against Manheim Township last year, is one of several key returning seniors for the Lady Warriors' this fall.
For two straight years, the first round of the District Three Triple-A playoffs has proven to be a hurdle for the Warwick field hockey team.
First, it was Hempfield that beat the Lady Warriors 2-1 in 2009. Then last year, the WHS girls drew a tough opening-round match-up against Hershey and suffered a hard-fought 2-1 loss. With that, Warwick ended its season at 11-8.
The good news for the Lady Warriors, though, is that most of their team is returning this fall after graduating only two senior starters — Bethany Ashworth and Mady Hershey.
As the Warwick girls prepare to open their season this Friday and Saturday with a pair of tough non-league games against Oley Valley and Central Dauphin, they do so with high expectations.

Warwick golfers climb to .500 in Section OneGolf
The Warwick golfers were playing in familiar surroundings last Thursday and it showed in the final results.
Competing on their home course, Overlook, the Warriors had two golfers break 80 en route to posting a solid score of 321.
That helped Warwick finish 4-2 on the day while evening their record to .500 (9-9) in Section One action.
Manheim Township (297) finished a perfect 6-0 and Cedar Crest was next at 318, just three shots in front of the Warriors. The bottom four teams were Conestoga Valley (332), Penn Manor (337), Hempfield (338) and Elizabethtown (376).
Drew Baker fired a 77 and Andrew Davies followed with a 79 to pace the WHS linksmen. In his first three outings, Baker has been a picture of consistency with a 77.6 average.
Rounding out Warwick ‘s top five were Josh Kauffman (81), Stephen Frey (84) and Ian Hart (92).
During action last Wednesday, Aug. 24, the Warriors went 3-3 in a Section match at Four Seasons with their round of 338. That was just two strokes behind third-place CV (336) and three back of Hempfield (335). Township remained perfect with a score of 301.

Warwick senior Julia Loose makes a return shot against Garden Spot's Kimberly Kassinger in the number three singles match in their non-league opener on Monday.
The Warwick girls tennis team got its first taste on Monday of the new match format in the Lancaster-Lebanon League this year.
Unfortunately, the results weren’t what they wanted, as the Lady Warriors dropped a 5-2 non-league loss to Garden Spot.
Playing doubles matches first, and switching from two to three, the Lady Spartans jumped to a 2-1 advantage with decisions from Leanne Burke and Kimberly Kassinger (8-2) at one, along with Nga Do and Irina Chuprin (8-6) in the number three match.
The Lady Warriors’ only doubles win came from Paige Myer and Andrea Aument, who posted a 6-4 conquest in the second match.
From there, GS outscored the Warwick girls 3-1 in singles to clinch the victory. Burke prevailed over Leah Blanck 6-2, 6-3 in the number one match, then Shannon O’Malley won by a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Amber Weaver at two, and Kassinger notched a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Julia Loose in the number three match.

Manheim Central junior Katelyn Grazan (far right) is a big part of the Lady Barons' plans at midfield this fall.
The Manheim Central field hockey team continued its run of qualifying for the Lancaster-Lebanon League and District Three Double-A playoffs last year. The Lady Barons advanced to both tournaments for the fifth straight year in 2010.
Unfortunately, however, the Central girls went two-and-out last year, suffering a 4-2 loss to Warwick in the L-L quarterfinals and then dropping a 5-0 shutout to Fleetwood in the opening-round of Districts.
While the Lady Barons lost five quality seniors from that squad in Sarah Bomberger, Randi Boyd, Megan Gingrich, Amanda Ruth and Nancy Saylor, optimism is again high in Manheim Central’s camp.
If they are to return to the post-season once more this October, they will do it with a new skipper in Samantha Shober, who becomes the Lady Barons’ fourth coach since the end of the 2004 season.

Ready for some football
If there’s a better time of year than fall, I don’t know what it is. My kids might argue with me on that point — after all, you can’t build snowmen or sand castles during that time of year. But from my vantage point, the weather is perfect, the leaves will soon begin to change … and oh yeah, it’s football season.
As we all took cover from Hurricane Irene last weekend, I couldn’t help but think a little bit of what that means for the next 10 Friday nights. How many times have we scratched our heads during the high school football season wondering how it was possible to get so many rainy, miserable Friday evenings in one stretch?
So here’s hoping that the wet weather during the final weekend in August was not a bad omen, but rather Mother Nature getting it out of her system.
While we’re at it, let’s hope that Warwick finally gets out of week one this Friday without another major injury. I’d say that the Warriors are due in that department. For the past two years, they have come out of their opener dealing with a serious blow to the lineup — first, running back Deron Thompson in 2010 and then QB Tyler Farnan last year.
