On East Third Avenue, Lititz, a tree fell into the street, taking down utility wires with it. The fall also resulted in wires being pulled from a home. With the exception of this one home, power was restored to customers on Third Avenue by Tuesday morning.
While Hurricane Irene left at least 33 dead, millions without electricity and billions of dollars in damage in its wake, the Lititz area managed to escape the brunt of its wrath.
Many area residents experienced power outages on Sunday, some stretching into Monday or later into the week. The Brickerville House Family Restaurant, at the intersection of Routes 322 and 501, suffered significant financial loss due to the blackouts.
The restaurant’s power went out Sunday morning around 8 a.m., according to Tony Agadis, co-owner.

Insight from energy insider Former oil executive to speak at Moravian Manor event
By: ROCHELLE A. SHENK Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer
Energy is a topic that’s in the news and on our minds a lot these days. Moravian Manor is hosting a thought-provoking evening with energy insider and former Shell Oil president John Hofmeister on Monday, Oct. 24.
"Energy Solutions that Make Sense: Taking Politics Out of Energy" will be held in the Heritage Ballroom at the Lancaster Marriott Penn Square. A VIP reception and book signing will be held at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7.
Nicole Michael, Moravian Manor director of marketing, said the event, called Engaging Community, is annual.
"We want to do something a little different, something to create an awareness of Moravian Manor as well as engage the community. Energy is a hot topic and something everyone can relate to. Nearly everyone buys gas for their vehicle and pays to heat their home," she explained.
Hofmeister, a Lancaster native, retired from Shell Oil Company in 2008. He founded and now heads up the non-profit nationwide membership association, Citizens for Affordable Energy. This public policy education firm promotes sound U.S. energy security solutions for the nation. Last year, he published his book, "Why We Hate Oil Companies: Straight Talk from an Energy Insider."

Snow in September? Council considers new ordinance
By: GARY P. KLINGER Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer
Just days after Hurricane Irene caused a stir all around town, Lititz Borough Council voted to advertise a proposed new ordinance that would deal with snow removal within borough limits.
Tuesday’s vote does not enact the ordinance, but does take it to the next step of advertising it for public review prior to council voting on whether or not to adopt it. Council plans to take action on it at the end of this month.
If passed, property owners or occupants would have 24 hours following the end of a snowfall to clear a pathway five feet wide or face being cited by Lititz police. It would also be their responsibility to assure that snow and ice is prevented from falling from all buildings to adjacent public sidewalks. And in cases where the snow on the sidewalk has become so hard that it cannot be removed without the likelihood of damage to the sidewalk, proper abrasive material must be spread in order to make travel safe.

Cable court date pushed to October Newport Commons residents days away from service switch
By: STEPHEN SEEBER Record Express Staff, Staff Writer
As their Sept. 6 deadline approaches, Newport Commons residents do have choices:
1. Make the switch from Blue Ridge to Windstream in order to continue receiving cable and Internet service (and as a result lose Phillies coverage and local programming, for now).
2. Prepare for life without television and websites.
"It didn’t go well," said Jim Pack, a resident of the apartment complex, referring to a private meeting management held for residents Aug. 25. "The Windstream thing is a done deal. As of the 6th, it’s them or nothing. It lasted around 1 1/2 hours. Most of the time it was Glass facing an angry mob. He started with a script that got interrupted immediately with shouts of ‘Why? Why? Why?’"
Glass is Michael Glass, owner of Newport Commons, who contests that residents will have a choice if Blue Ridge goes through the proper channels of setting up an engineer-approved wiring system.
"Blue Ridge has the capability to do this, but they have chosen to take a legal route as opposed to a more practical route," he said, "and they’re wasting time. Clearly there are people at Newport Commons who would prefer to have Blue Ridge service, but they (Blue Ridge) aren’t doing what they need to do to provide service."
