Lititz opens final week with loss to Township Playoff berth at stake in last two games

By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor, Staff Writer

It all boils down to this week for the Lititz Oddfellows.

With a New Era Tournament berth at stake from the Lancaster County Midget League, the Oddfellows will play three games in a span of four days.

Unfortunately for Lititz, however, things didn’t get started on such a great note, as Manheim Township took a 5-0 lead in the first inning on Monday and never trailed, going on to beat the Oddfellows 14-4 in a School League at Warrior Field in Lititz.

That left the Oddfellows (5-6-2) just one point behind the Manheim VFW (6-6-1) for the eighth and final playoff berth. But the two back-yard rivals were slated to play last night (Wednesday), and then while Lititz finishes up on Thursday against Strasburg/Willow Street, Manheim plays St. Leo.

So Wednesday’s winner could earn the driver’s seat for the final spot in the New Era Tournament.

"If we win both, we’re in no matter what anybody else does," Lititz skipper Frank Camera said.

The Oddfellows got some help on Monday night with Lancaster shutting down Manheim 2-0. But Lititz wasn’t able to capitalize, as Manheim Township benefitted sloppy play in the field by the Oddfellows.

Woodridge finishes off 6-0 season Second straight win vs. Overlook completes perfect record

Woodridge completed its dual meet season in Division One of the Lancaster Summer League with a 6-0 record after defeating Skyline 248-182 and Overlook 226-204 last week. The Woodridge swimmers will now prepare for their Divisional Championships this Saturday at Skyline.

In their victory over Skyline, Emily Cameron improved her team record in the 50 free and 50 butterfly, in addition to shattering the pool record in the 50 free.

Against Overlook, Nick Beard earned a new team record in the open boys 50 breastroke and Woodridge’s 12-and-under girls relay (Anna Lance, Katie Oberholtzer, Paetyn Zeamer, Emma Schouten) dropped nearly two seconds while improving their team record.

Woodridge never trailed in the Overlook meet while beating their rivals for the second straight year. They jumped to a 50-40 advantage after the freestyle events, then still led 98-82 after the backstroke, 146-124 at the end of the breastroke and 191-169 following the butterfly events. From there, they needed to win four relay events to clinch the victory, and they captured decisions from the 8U girls, 8U boys, 10U boys, 12U girls and 12U boys to clinch it.

Sam Shober, a recent Lebanon Valley College grad, has been named to succeed Katie Gerfen as Manheim Central's head field hockey coach.

Over the past six years, the Manheim Central field hockey program has dealt with a lot of change at the head coach’s position.

Three different people — Michelle Haydt, Janelle Benner and Katie Gerfen — have held the post in that time span.

Now Sam Shober has taken over as the Lady Barons’ fourth skipper since the end of the 2004 season. And she is hoping to bring some stability to the job.

Shober, who graduated from Lebanon Valley College in December, 2010, was approved as the Lady Barons’ new field hockey coach at Manheim Central school board’s June 15 meeting, replacing Gerfen, who has accepted the head coach’s position at Solanco.

Warwick 10/11 All-Stars fall to Ephrata, Solanco

The Warwick 10/11 All-Stars were down, but not out.

That’s the attitude they carried with them to the Solanco Little League complex last Sunday after dropping their opening game to Ephrata just one day earlier in the double-elimination District 23 Little League Tournament.

Then, even after falling behind 5-0 in the first inning to Solanco, they continued to battle. But unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be.

Trailing by five going to the bottom of the first, Warwick got a leadoff triple from Bryce Zimmerman and an RBI ground by Connor Cowher to get on the scoreboard.

Solanco added to their lead with three in the top of the third, but the red and black again answered right away. This time, Zimmerman started it with a hit by pitch, Patrick Quinn walked and Matthew Ensinger had an RBI single, the first of his three base hits in the game. After Simon Gerofsky walked, Ryan Aukamp hit an RBI groundout to make it 8-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, with Warwick facing an 11-3 deficit, Gerofsky singled, Aukamp walked and Ben Kreider delivered an RBI base hit.
