Lloyd G. Cooke, 97, of Landis Homes Retirement Community, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 16, 2011.
Born in Dillsburg, he was the son of the late Gleason J. and Annie Shambaugh Cooke. His first wife, Helen A. Weigle Cooke died in 1982; and his second wife, Grace F. Kistler Hawthorne Cooke died in 2000.
A resident of Mount Joy most of his life, Lloyd worked 37 years for the former Hamilton Watch Company in Lancaster, retiring in 1978. He was a faithful member of Mount Joy Church of God and the Church of God Seniors Club.
Active in the community, Lloyd was a former member of the Mount Joy Lions Club, a life member of Mount Joy Sportsmen’s Association and served on the board of the Mount Joy Borough Water Authority for many years. He was a 1932 graduate of the former Dillsburg High School and a graduate of the former Patton Trade School.
Lloyd loved to read and travel and was involved in archeological digs in Israel through Baylor University. An avid vegetable gardener, he also enjoyed gunsmithing, woodworking, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by two sons: Ronald Cooke, of Littleton, Colo.; and Richard Cooke, husband of Lynn Ogg, of South Berwick, Maine; a stepdaughter: Harriet Kometa, wife of Michael, of Lititz; a stepson: Jeffrey Hawthorne, husband of Beth Hershey, of Columbus, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Leslie, Wayne and Weir Cooke; and a sister: Rhetta Cooke.
Funeral services will be held at Mount Joy Church of God, 30 E. Main St. in Mount Joy, July 21 at 11 a.m. Friends may visit the church from 10-11. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens in Columbia.
