Familiar face returns to Warwick Twp. Police
By: GARY P. KLINGER Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer
Ed Tobin is returning to work for the Warwick Township Police Department.
Well, sort of.
During the July 20 supervisors meeting, Warwick Township offered Tobin an independent contract to administer the police department until a new police chief could be found, placed and trained.
Tobin, a veteran township police officer, was Warwick’s interim police chief earlier this year, but he retired from the position in order to run for district judge in the primary election, which he won. He will be on the general election ballot in November.
"This is on a part-time basis through the transition period," explained supervisor chairman W. Logan Myers. "It offers Ed an hourly fee and will be in effect until approximately the end of November. We have the option to terminate the agreement sooner if his services are no longer needed, but this is strictly an interim step while we wrap up the search for a new police chief."
Warwick has not had a permanent police chief since the retirement of Rich Garipoli in early 2010.

Lititz Mayor Ron Oettel (left) welcomes new junior council member Anna Workman (center) to her seat at borough hall, along with councilman and junior council administrator Doug Bomberger (right).
Lititz Borough Council has sworn in its second junior council member, Linden Hall senior Anna Workman.
Councilman Doug Bomberger has been instrumental in developing the junior council program. After collecting and screening essays from interested local students, he was enthusiastic about introducing Workman during Tuesday night’s council meeting.
The daughter of Mark and Nora Workman, Anna sees this as a way to learn first-hand how local government works. She also felt it was a good way to serve the community. After completing her five month term on council and her senior year in high school, she plans to attend college and major in graphic design and psychology.
Workman succeeds Aaron Graybill, who recently graduated from Warwick High School.

The oppressive heat of the last week seems to have altered downtown shopping habits. When our photographer recently journeyed out for some feature photos, he noticed that Main Street in Lititz was unusually barren.
While it’s hard to say just how the brutal heatwave is affecting downtown businesses, it seems as though the weather is at least prompting people to adjust when they shop.
"I think everyone you ask will have their own perspective on the heat and how it affects their individual business," said Gaylord Poling of Venture Lititz. "I am not finding a decrease in business, but a skewed pattern as to when individuals shop. I see the sidewalks busy at 10 a.m. and then again from 3 to 5 p.m. I have personally experienced a big increase in business from 5 to 7 p.m., and part of this could be weather related. It appears that people are trying to avoid the heat of the day."

Lititz Family Medicine celebrates 65 years
By: WENDY KOMANCHEK Record Express Correspondent, Staff Writer
In this day of rushed lives and medical insurance debates, there is a bright light in Lititz on the medical front: Lititz Family Medicine (LFM), located at 562 West Second Avenue. This year, the practice is celebrating their 65th anniversary.
The practice started back in 1946 when Dr. Paul Hess bought Dr. Eyler’s private family practice at 23 S. Broad Street. Then, in 1950, Dr. Reyer Swan joined Dr. Hess’s practice until 1952, when the Korean War broke out. For two years, Dr. Swan went on active military service. When he returned home to Lititz in 1954, Dr. Swan opened his own family practice at 127 South Broad Street.
In 1956, Dr. Hess and Dr. Swan formed a medical partnership, and 23 S. Broad Street became the home of the new family practice. Also, that same year, Dr. Arthur Holder joined the practice, and the name changed to Hess, Swan, and Holder. Eventually, the practice grew to the point where it needed to expand its office space, and Hess, Swan, and Holder purchased the grocery store next door to their practice. They demolished the store and enlarged their facility in its place.

Woodridge wins Division One title Big comeback clinches team’s first crown in many years
By: BRUCE MORGAN Lititz Record Sports Editor, Staff Writer
Staring at a 99-point deficit at the close of the morning session at the Division-One Swimming Championships last Saturday, Woodridge needed a big comeback if they had any hopes of overtaking Overlook.
Remarkably, they got exactly that … from their youngest swimmers, no less.
The 8-U boys and girls alone combined to earn 98 points in the relays, while Oliver Lance captured a pair of golds in the boys 10-U 25 back (17.67) and 25 breastroke (20.28), Nolan Rucci took first in the boys 8-U 25 breastroke (23.03), and Emma Oberholtzer won the girls 10-U 25 breastroke (19.89), as Woodridge rallied to win the title with 807 total points at Skyline. That was 29.5 points better than long-time powerhouse Overlook (777.5).
Woodridge coach Heidi Cicala said it was sheer elation for the team to capture its first Divisional title in many years. It was another monumental victory for Woodridge just one year after snapping Overlook’s streak of 104 straight wins without a loss.

Preston Kimmel receives congratulations from his teammates after slugging a home run in Manheim's win over Penn Manor last week.
When the Manheim Lions were just 5-5 at one point, skipper Jeff Flanagan didn’t know what to expect this season.
So when he was standing at Kunkle Field on Monday night for the New Era Tournament junior-midget semi-finals, he was elated.
Unfortunately for Manheim, though, their remarkable run ended at the hands of Ryan Dornes and Manheim Township Black. Township’s star was a one-person wrecking crew, as he slammed two home runs and tossed a four-hitter while striking out 10 in a 9-3 conquest under the lights in Mount Joy.
"My hat’s off to (Dornes)," Flanagan said. "He pounded the zone. He’s a nice pitcher. He did a nice job."
Considering how far his players came this year, however, Flanagan could not have been more proud of his team. They ended the season with a 19-12-1 record while taking home the Lancaster County Youth Baseball League championship along the way.

Lititz relief pitcher Zach Hurst delivers a strike in the Oddfellows' 8-2 win over the Manheim VFW in Midget action last Wednesday, July 20.
When the Lititz Oddfellows have played well this year, it has usually meant putting up crooked numbers on the scoreboard.
Last Wednesday, July 20, in a must-game for their playoff hopes, the Oddfellows hung three such numbers against back-yard rival Manheim VFW and earned a key 8-2 victory in a Lancaster County Midget Baseball School League game in Manheim.
"I was happy with the game," Lititz skipper Frank Camera said. "We knew that we controlled our own fate, so we went in and took it the way we needed to."
They still controlled their own fate on Thursday night in their regular-season finale against Strasburg/Willow Street. And behind a 21-hit onslaught, the Oddfellows cruised to a 14-6 win in Lititz and jumped over SWS to claim the seventh seed in the New Era Tournament, which gets underway this Thursday and Friday, July 28 and 29, at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster.

Warwick 9 year-olds take second in District 23 Little League Tourney
Riding well-balanced efforts from their offense and pitching staff, Warwick’s all-stars advanced to the District 23 Little League nine-year-old tournament championship game at the Wilbur complex last Sunday.
Unfortunately, their hopes for a title fell just short while suffering a hard-fought 6-5 loss to Octorara in the final game.
"We had our chances, we could’ve won both games we lost," manager Reid Miller said. "But it was a great group of kids. My expectations were that they would play well and they did."
Warwick jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on consecutive hits by John Seibert, Robbie Heckman and Trey Miller. Then Octorara answered with a three-spot to take its first lead of the game.
It remained a 3-2 contest until the fifth inning when Warwick scored three times to pull back in front 5-3. Leadoff batter Camron Hess reached base and scored on Seibert’s RBI double. Later, Trey Miller added an RBI base hit to give Warwick’s its two-run cushion.
But Octorara continued to fight and it scored one in the fifth to make it a one-run game. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Octorara put together a two-run rally to earn a walk-off 6-5 victory. John Seibert pitched superbly in the game as Warwick came up just short of the championship.
